how much play should be in the rear driveline?

crawled under my truck yesterday and I was playing with the drive shaft with the tranny in N. I have about 3/4 of play when I turn the drive shaft from the rear axle to the back of the transfer case. Is this bad?

when ever I go in to reverse or Drive you can hear the CLUNK. sounds like crap, how do I attend to this?

Talking

It's time for NEW U-Joints, , mine does the same thing, plus my Yoke seal is leaking so i'll kill two birds with one stone and fix both while I have the Drive shaft out.

I was thinking it might be the u joints but they have no play at all...

the guy who is selling the truck told me that the posi is the reason for the play,
can this be so?

the play seems to start at the transfer case and continues to the diff.

what is giving more?

It's due to "slack" in the rear end itself. I had this problem in mine. Changed to an Eaton posi and now it does not do it. I think this is a common thing among older Chevy trucks.

Do you like working on differentials? I hope so, cuz if the differential is the problem you're going to be shimming and adjusting enough to make you want to sell the truck! If it is in the differential, it's because the ring gear is too far away from the pinion. Get the shim pack out!!!

Find some specs on backlash, and get yourself a dial gauge. Check the backlash by moving the pinion. If it's out of spec, it's the ring gear. First of all open up the rear cover and look for obvious damage and play. Maybe it's a bearing...
