Fuel pump question 1979
So I was looking under the truck the day and noticed a random hose by the fuel pump. It is a rubber hose with electrical tape and it is bent in a U shape. I thought well maybe it is a vent hose for gas tank but there is no place for it on fuel pump. The fuel pump just has a line coming from tank and one going to carb. I looked at fuel pumps on Advance auto for a 350 and still no fuel pump with a vent provision. The rubber hose is connected to a steel line but was hard to trace back. Anyone know what the line might be and why it would just be hanging there?

Never seen a vent or return line on a mechanical fuel pump.

They are pretty common on mid to late 70's and 80's 4x4 with a small block my 79 k5 my 76 k10 my 75 k5 all had the return stock but my 74 k5 doesn't and neither did my 76 c10 they bumped up emissions in 79 so they probably but it on 2wd starting that year

My 84 has a return line from the fuel pump to the tanks. It helps keep the gas from vaporizing in the fuel pump and vapor locking the fuel line. The return line has a small orifice to only let a small amount return to the tank.

Okay, well - I never worked on my (brand new) 1980 much in the couple years that I had it, and the next newer square body that I got was a 1991 with electric pump.
Regarding the original question, then maybe the fuel pump has been replaced with a single line pump for an earlier vintage, and the loop is to plug off the return line ???

So since I am not planning on replacing my fuel pump anytime soon. Is it a big deal if I stick a bolt in the end of the hose and clamp it off? I always wondered why the truck smelled like gas so much. I thought it was just because it needed a carb rebuild or charcoal cannister, which I am still planning on doing the carb.
