Restore or not? 71 K5 Blazer Light Yellow w/ A/C and roll bar
I recently bought a 1525AA light yellow Blazer from the original owners here in Colorado. They gave me a folder an inch thick of records including the original purchase order, title with 06/01/71 purchase date, the Protect-O-Plate, owners manual, and receipts for a transmission rebuild, a refurb carburetor and GM crate motor installed 60k miles ago.
My questions are; If I'm going to do the rust repair and repaint would I be doing the K5 a disservice painting it a different color? The K5 has already been repainted once and had the rockers replaced. Now it needs both outer rockers, lower doors and 1/4 repair in front of rear wheels. If I do the repairs I know a great painter that could color match, spray only the repaired areas and blend in with the old paint to preserve the "patina" on the remaining body panels or do I just repaint it the original light yellow? Thanks for your input

I would repaint original color, but it's your truck...
I have always painted whatever color I wanted without regard to original colors, but I have never started out with a very good truck! My red blazer had 14 previous owners and my jimmy, well, I never tracked it back. Good luck, Rg

Re: Restore or not? 71 K5 Blazer Light Yellow w/ A/C and roll bar
If you just color match the repaired areas, you will be able to enjoy the Blazer without worry about the paint. This is my vote.
If you repaint any color you will not want to use the Blazer like its meant to be used, for fear of damaging the paint. If you do repaint it a different color, do it right and get the the door jambs firewall dash and inside of tub and doors done as well. I can't stand to see car/trucks with repaints that have different color paint in these areas. |

Really up to you it's your truck. I prefer stock or at least period correct factory colors. BTW I like the original 525 pale yellow. Got any side / exterior pics of what you got there. Your right, those are just teasers.

Re: Restore or not? 71 K5 Blazer Light Yellow w/ A/C and roll bar
Thanks for the comments and input guys. I dropped the K5 with the guy who cut my long bed down to a short. He's replacing outer rockers and repairing the 1/4s and doors. After the metal work is done I'll decide on a full exterior repaint or just spot paint repair. Either way it's staying the original yellow.
Found info on the original purchase order for the dealer installed roll bar. Cost $44.96. Here's a picture of it....more teaser.

Interesting truck. Did it still have the factory white steel wheels and chrome hubcaps. Interested in seeing a pic of that yellow with the rims.

Re: Restore or not? 71 K5 Blazer Light Yellow w/ A/C and roll bar
Blazer came with 3 original hub caps, but not the original wheels. I'm going with 15" Rally wheels and 31 X 10.5 BF Goodrich All Terrain T/As. In this teaser pic you can see the $33.71 dealer installed trailer hitch.

Re: Restore or not? 71 K5 Blazer Light Yellow w/ A/C and roll bar
Sold it, I can't believe it myself! I was driving the K5 from my metal guy's shop after he finished the door, rocker and tub repairs to the paint shop and a guy flags me down and asks me if I want to sell the K5? He made an offer I couldn't refuse! I was planning on repainting, new dash pad, mirrors, pedal covers, seat foam and seat upholstery and drive it for winter. Oh well, money talks. Hope to find another one soon.

If someone's looking for a well documented K5 Blazer. Here's my old Blazer on EBay right now.

Re: Restore or not? 71 K5 Blazer Light Yellow w/ A/C and roll bar
Looks like he pulled it already. Sounds like a kind of shady dealer since you said it needed rockers, and you had metal work done to it, but in the ad he specifically says it has all original metal, even the rocker panels.......

Re: Restore or not? 71 K5 Blazer Light Yellow w/ A/C and roll bar
I looked at pictures at my metal guys place today and the rockers were very solid, so they were only patched. Door corners, lower fenders and tub just behind doors were patched. I think the auction was pulled because the title of the auction was incorrect. Title was "Blazer side trim".

How many highlighters did he use to paint that? That thing probably looks sick under a black light. Skimped on painting the dash and the colors clash.

It's back up on EBay, here's the auction...http://m.ebay.com/itm/Chevrolet-Blaz...251?nav=SEARCH
I sold the Blazer before painting it. Honestly the color is what scared me. As original and as well documented as the truck was, you had to paint it the original color.

I like the color, as long as it's someone else's truck. I think it would start to be a bit much seeing it day in day out, IMHO. |

Re: Restore or not? 71 K5 Blazer Light Yellow w/ A/C and roll bar
I think if I had done the paint myself I would have tried to match the more pale sun faded yellow on the interior and dash. A pale bamboo yellow not highlighter yellow.

Re: Restore or not? 71 K5 Blazer Light Yellow w/ A/C and roll bar
The Factory 525 "light yellow" looks REALLY like highlighter yellow when 1st applied. It mellows out after a while in the sun.
Mine was the same.
