Headlight options

Anybody done aftermarket headlamps, what did you use and how do you like them?
Anybody done halos? I'm looking at truck lite LEDs but open to anything just want modern headlight visibility, hids or leds. Want to go with something dot approved don't want to be the guy who blinds every one in oncoming traffic.

I use H4 style with relays. Usually use 80 /100 watt bulbs with great results. The last couple sets Ive done have had city lights in them. The city lights are usually wired to parking light circuit and give the headlight a cool glow with running lights. I get em off of ebay by searching the headlight code ie 6024.

I would check out a well known brand, like Pilot or Hella. Check out the manufacturer's website when you can to see what info you can find out about that particular light before just buying something that is claimed to be legal on ebay or something. I've been burned a couple times by headlights that claimed to be street legal, or are "better than sealed beams" but didn't list the manufacturer. They turned out to be a cheap item, meant for off road use only (like a full-on show vehicle or not intended to be driven at night) and I didn't get a decent light pattern no matter what I tried.

I think the last set of replacement lights I bought were from Pilot Automotive. They use the same H4 style bulbs as the cheap-o lights, but worked much better. I believe they actually said DOT approved.

If you have the 7" sealed beam on Chevy's (not the 5-3/4" quad light on the GMC's), the newer Jeep Wrangler is supposed to have the same size lights that can be swapped into our trucks. I can't remember the years for certain, but I believe 2007-2013? I haven't done it though.

I used Jeep Wrangler headlights in my '67 Panel Truck. Jeep JK Wrangler headlights ('07-current) are a direct bolt in swap for the old sealed beam headlights in our trucks. They even have the 3 lugs on the back for alignment and use the stock '67-'72 trim rings. I went ahead and bought the headlight conversion pigtails for the swap too.

I bought both on e-Bay. Here are the actual pigtails I bought and the headlights I bought were from a private seller that changed his over to something different. They are in excellent condition. You have to be careful because there are a lot of look alikes. The 2nd link is to an auction that is about the same price as I paid for my OEM lights. They do make exact replacements too but you have to watch, some of them come with bulbs and some don't. The easy way to tell the OEM's are by the back. I think the lights are the same from 2007-2015.

Using a Relay kit is going to be the best bang for your buck out the gate. Once installed you have many options for brighter headlights. The Hella H4's with 80/100 as user Barba Negro mentioned are great, I am using the same setup on my 66 GMC with great results. But you can also go with full LED headlights but starting with the relay kit is going to be the key. I use relays and Sylvania silver star sealed beam headlights. 1000% improvement over stock.

For my GMC I contacted Daniel Stern Lighting and went with Cibie replacement headlight housings with Halogen bulbs and relay kit so all four come on with brights. I think I did the H1/H4 combo. Awesome upgrade!

Haven't ran them on the road but I got these off Amazon. For 50ish. Made of glass, h4 bulbs with built-in led halo, and you can run a 194 for a blinkered in them if you choose.

I've found the absolute best bang for your buck is to clean the contacts at the bulbs as well as cleaning up those ground wires

many times you get twice as bright for the cost of sandpaper about 25cents worth will get you lights

The thing is you can't stop there with the stock setup. You also have to clean the three terminals on the dimmer switch and all of the terminals on the headlight switch to do it right....

I did the DOT Hella H4's on my '69. HUGE improvement with just the stock wiring.

I really like them and have 4 or 5 sets on various cars, eventually to be everything unless LED prices drop by 75%.

I swapped to some H4 5.25" retrofit bulbs. They seem a bit thinner than the sealed beams. I threw some ballasted LED H4 bulbs in. They give you the nice white light. They probably aren't brighter, but they run cooler and use less power.

Not sure I have a picture of the whole setup, but it isn't ground breaking stuff.

i'm sure the 2400 Lumens is Bull5hit but they work fine. A normal headlight is around 900 lumens for reference.

They have a cooling fan. I have had similar ones on my motorcycle for over 2 years with no issues. Just make sure the ballast and fan are reasonably out of the weather - direct rain or snow probably won't do it any favors.

I had the trucklites on my '13 rubicon, and loved them so much that I pulled them off when I sold it with plans of using them on my 68. The light pattern isn't as "clean" and blended as some of the more expensive lights, but the output is awesome, and the spread is very wide.
