motor mount update ?

Hello to all, I am wondering if anyone has installed the newer motor mounts (73-87) in this vintage of trucks. If so , what type of donor vehicle? (Small Block V-8) Thanks, Ed

They wont be a direct bolt in, you will need to redrill the holes in the frame,it but should work out. Im not sure if the eng brackets are different from BB to SB, but the frame stands should be the same 73 - late 70s at least. the stands have several different sets of holes. I have used the stands & deisel brackets/mounts to install a BB olds in my longhorn......I redrilled the top of the frame to bolt them down, & opted to weld the stands on the crossmember(the eng was already positioned). Good luck, crazyL

I didnt have a height issue on the stands I used, they came off a 77 with a 5.7 deisel. Dean, were the stands too tall to lay on the top of the frame rails?

Its been a while since I did that swap......trying to streeech the memory! The bottom (rear i beleive ) didnt sit right on the crossmember.......I heated & dimpled a spot ea side on the crossmember, & the top laid flat on the top edge of the frame. I think i got 1 hole to line up on the top on ea side, & had to drill the rest. Just curious....how much spacer did you need to use? crazyL

Guys, I am amazed at this post! This is EXACTLY what I was dealing with yesterday! I was going to start a post today on this very topic.

I had taken the engine cradle and disk brakes out of a 78 Suburban and bolted them into my 70 pickup. Imagine my disappointment when I found the newer towers do not bolt in. The frame on the 70 is a 1/2" shorter than the 78.

I was thinking of using spacers at the top of the towers, but I wasn't sure that was the answer. But it appears to be. I'll figure out what I need for a spacer and just have a chunk of bar the appropriate thickness and cut it to length. Use some grade 8 fasteners and I should be set. My original plan was to bolt the towers at the top and drill new holes at the bottom. I was going to reposition the motor mounts on the towers until everything sat where it needed to be. I don't think this is going to work as the engine sits too high in the engine bay.

Worse yet, I was going to just reuse the old towers from the 70, but I can't find them. But I prefer the newer motor mounts anyway.

If I get time, I'll go down to the shop and get a pic of what it looks like now.

Later
Mike

The other option is too cut the towers and reweld them. but id be worried about the strength. They are to tall so what i will probably do is get a spacer fabricated and install it
I wonder why some of the towers are shorter then the others. One would think the tower would all be a standard height on all of them.

My longhorn has a different frame than the other 67-72s......I didnt think it was different in the nose area, but it might be I do know that the rails are taller starting just ahead of the firewall, & on back. At the trans crossmember, the frame is 8" tall, then tapers to 7" till it kicks up to go over the rear axle, then tapers down to about 5" in height. crazyL
