261 or 292

I currently have a 261 numbers matching in my truck that has never been rebuilt and runs great, but a guy I know offered me a well running low milage 292 with a power steering adaptor bracket for $200. And a offenhauser 4bbl intake and headers for $200 what are your thoughts? Should I buy the 292 and the intake/headers and put that in my truck or buy just the intake/headers and put them on my 261?

Re: 261 or 292

I might be wrong, but I don't think the intake and headers from a 292 would fit your 261.

Re: 261 or 292

The 292 headers and intake will Not bolt to the 261. The 216-235-261 were a different generation design. The 230-250-292 were the later generation design. You can get headers and a better intake for the 261. I'd be careful buying a "Low miles" engine if you can't hear it run. But then again....if you get an engine...and some hop up parts for $400 its well worth taking a gander at least. Man....wish I got an intake and headers for $200! lol

Re: 261 or 292

I did a little research and it looks like it won't work. You would need an intake and headers from a 216/235/261. The 194/230/250/292 appears to be a completely different animal.

Re: 261 or 292

If you trust the seller that the 292 is in fact a low mileage engine, I would definitely go with the 292. You will have to change the bellhousing as the bellhousing from the 261 will not bolt up. You will also need the 292 flywheel. You will also have to install side engine mounts.
