TH350 advice won't engage gears

I've got a 1975 Blazer. It was driving well until recently, from a dead stop the tranny would slip very hard trying to find first gear. I would have to rev the engine up several times to get the gear to engage, once engaged everything would run normally, until the next relight or stop sign. Over 10 days things got worse until the tranny wouldn't engage at all and eventually no gears would take hold. At this point the truck placed in any gear (even reverse) will not move.

I've checked the fuild levels and did the normal checks of things. Everything appeared normal. My plan is to have the transmission rebuilt for about $900. in the next couple of weeks. I'm trying to make sure i've not overlooked something.

Again, this is a TH350 Automatic Transmission on a 4x4 1975 Blazer.

Only thing I can think of is to check the trans filter. If completely plugged up, could make it act as if out of fluid. If it is plugged up that bad, rebuild probably needed soon anyway.
If the bolt holding the filter in place has came loose, the filter and pickup pipe could have settled to the bottom of the pan.

Front drive shaft has been removed. But engaging the transfer case doesn't have an impact on the TH 350.
