Re: Holy crap, my brakes failed!
I wonder if General Motors knows about this? Millions of our trucks could be recalled to have the brake anchors replaced.

Re: Holy crap, my brakes failed!
Wow, mine failed last week on the way home from work. I also don't have a parking brake! It made for an interesting drive home. Had to bail into a parking lot once, and ended up on my lawn when I came in my driveway.
At first I didn't know what was wrong, other than my master was empty. Couldn't see a leak anywhere. So, filled the master, and let it sit. A week later, I found this: Did the shoes and hardware, can't remember if that's a new cylinder. Doesn't really matter now! |

Re: Holy crap, my brakes failed!
So does anyone have any clue as to why they break, or don't brake ? ( sorry had to). I thought that pin was not under any pressure.

Re: Holy crap, my brakes failed!
Well, slepysal has offered and in the same state. Overnight delivery?
Come to think of it the pick n pull here has some remnants of an old GMC newly in the yard. I remember seeing the backing plate intact. Another option would be to have a machinist make one from a piece of hex stock. |

Re: Holy crap, my brakes failed!
Isn't this a part you could pull off any 10 bolt drum brakes in the junk yard?

Re: Holy crap, my brakes failed!
Surprised to see that break. All it does is hold return springs and keep pads from bottoming out wheel cylinders. I wouldn't think there is that much force involved.

Re: Holy crap, my brakes failed!
Drumyn61, the first time that happened to me I thought it was a fluke. (I used a rural mailbox to stop.) The second time it happened, I converted to disc! (Thank God I was only in a parking lot.) Years and years of return springs straining against that pin takes its toll I guess. Take it from me, don't wait for the next time! Go disc or at least convert to a dual master cyl.

Re: Holy crap, my brakes failed!
Don't the heels of the shoes ride on that part? If one of the pucks in the cylinder were seizing up one shoe might cause more stress in one direction rather than both balancing themselves out.
Either that or GM should have used better quality steel for that part. |

Re: Holy crap, my brakes failed!
You may be on to something, if the rear piston siezed the front would tend to make the whole shoe assembly want to turn and the forward motion of the vehicle would add a lot of force.

Re: Holy crap, my brakes failed!
If they were replaced at one time they probably were not torqued the the correct specs. These are parts that need to be torqued.

Re: Holy crap, my brakes failed!
Those are definitely replacements, originals would show their age, (rust/patina) best guess they are overseas crap....! Looks as if they have been off and on a few times..
