I have a buddy who will paint my truck for the cost of the materials. How much would it cost in materials to paint my truck(Gm torch red)

price depends on the TYPE of paint as well as the BRAND.

Remember, especially with paint & paint work, you get what you pay for.

Like Shane said, depends on what type and brand of paint. 100 dollars will buy alot of rattle cans. Some top end paints will run you over a 1000 dollars a gallon. The question is, how long do you want it to last?

Dude, you need to talk to your painter....

Single stage paint will use a lot more paint, like 1-2 gallons probably.

Base/Clear could use as little as 1-2 quarts of paint. Then clear on top of that.

Also, you will need reducers, catalyst, sealers, primer, tack rags, paper, tape, pre-kleen wax and grease remover, color sanding paper, buffing and polishing compounds, etc....

Your painter will tell you which paint system he uses (urethane, acrylic enamel, single stage or two stage). Also, different colors cost different prices. Your painter will likely be very particular about what brand he uses too. I know I am. Also, your painter will likely be able to buy the products through his shop for a lot cheaper than you can.

I painted my own truck (also a short stepside) and I used Acrylic Enamel. It's cheap, and perfect for me as im not a professional painter. (although I've done about 12 by now) I drive my truck all year long and touch ups/resprays are a fact of life so I wouldn't want expensive paint.

My blue cost me under $75 for a gallon. You could spray your whole truck with one to one and a half gallons. (I think I used 1 gallon and one quart for mine but that was inside and out as well as the engine compartment)

When red is involved, it gets alot more expensive. Could almost double the price I believe.

Remember too, a paint job is only as good as the body work under it. Paint will only highlight bad body work and repairs not done correctly will pop out eventually.

I'd be afraid to drive my truck if the paint alone cost $1,000. LOL

Go ahead, scratch my blue enamel...I'll make out like a bandit with the insurance money. hee hee...

It's true about red - the Guards red I used on my truck was just about $350 a gallon - Chroma - Base II - (base coat). There are also different grades of clear - I used the mid range stuff which was about $100 a gallon if I remember correctly. By the time it was done, materials ended up being about $1200... This was about 10 years ago.

Good point about preparation - spend the extra $$$$ so your painter will spend the necessary time doing the prep work and not take short cuts.

Same story, did a 69 Camaro for a buddy of mine, "Viper Red". This was about 8 years ago, and $1,300 worth of materials (Dupont Centari). If your on a budget, red isn't going to keep you there.

Thanks guys for all the help. I dont know if i can afford red so anybody have any suggestions for other colors. I dont feel like redoing the inside so it would have to look good with red. Thanks

Black and red look awsome together, and it just happens that black is the cheapest color.

Make sure that the body is straight!! Black is also the worst for showing the flaws.
