200-4R Transmission help
Hello everybody,
So I have a 200-4R transmission here that was "rebuilt" when I bolted it into my 66 283 it matched up perfectly. However, when I went to put it into reverse for a test drive, It would engage into gear, however it wont go any where. So I thought maybe not enough fluid and maybe the gears were jammed so I put it in neutral to see if I could rock it into gear and I was not able to roll the truck backwards, only forwards. My torque converter was meshed up fine and I double checked all the simple things I could think I did wrong. So I pulled the transmission and have it sitting on the ground in front of me and before taking it to the transmission shop I was hoping any body here had any tech advise? I am able to turn the output shaft counter clockwise in every gear but park, but it wont turn clockwise in any gear. The input shaft will turn freely in any gear. Any advise is helpful and I am hoping I missed something simple and just been staring at it for too long. -T |

Re: 200-4R Transmission help
I rebuilt a TH350 and had a similar issue. Not a transmission guy so take this for what it's worth.
I put a tapered spring in the valve body backwards, so the valve was "falling" into the large opening of the spring instead of the hitting the smaller end as designed. It was an easy fix, but a hard diagnosis.

Re: 200-4R Transmission help
Did you have the TV cable connected to the carb linkage with the proper 'kit' and were the trans line pressures set to spec?

Re: 200-4R Transmission help
It is nothing you did....You didn't rebuild it....Correct?
I would put money on the Direct Drum or Sun-Shell being locked down, The most common reason for this.....A long Valve Body bolt in the wrong spot, There are 2 different length bolts. Using a Long one in a Short bolt hole will lock the geartrain down. If you actually drove it forward....It would take off in Second gear. Here is a Drawing of the Direct Clutch Drum, Sun-Shell (GM calls it a Input Drum) & Intermediate Band. If it is still under some kind of warranty, Take it back to the builder! And him deal with this rookie mistake. If you have to deal with it...Let me know. It the bolt got bent....This could get hairy!!! |

Re: 200-4R Transmission help
Hey thank you for the responses!
I ended it up contacting the guy who I got it from and he exchanged it for another one. So I have the new trans in the truck now and took it for a spin, doesnt have exhaust yet so the neighbors loved it haha. Need to adjust the TV cable I think, felt like it should have shifted to second but I was just putting down the street and back so not sure on that yet. But It now rolls in reverse! haha |
