Mustang II Steering C Notch

In the process of doing the c notch for my 1950. Was curious to see what you guys did for the steering rack clearance. The directions say 5" from the center of the crossmember but that seemed way too far forward. Here's what I have now. Basically looking for pictures anyone may have.

So you pretty much cut the c notch pretty close to the crossmember right? I just feel like I cut mine really close to it but it looks similar to yours I guess.

if you measure the distance from the crossmember to the centreline of the steering rack, then you mark the frame forward of the crossmember that same distance, that will be the centre line of the c notch cut away. follow?

As Ogre says, bolt you rack up, then take the arm and more forward as far as it will go, then backward as far as it will go. If the rubber boot doesn't touch, your good to go

You could do the same as who ever did my 40 Ford's frame.......... Cut the front frame horns off and move them up 2"............... Yeah, quality. not! Don't do it that way. Haha

cant mount up the rack because it hits the frame, that's the whole point of having to cut it

if your rack is still hitting the frame, you need to cut clearance for it
no good pic of mine from the side, my notch is further forward like oldman's




yoshi looks like he used actual mustII parts with the strut rod
as long as the rack doesn't hit the frame with the suspension bottomed out he's good to go

Does anyone know how far forward the heists boxing plates are supposed to go? I have seen them pushed all the way forward and others with a gap in front of them so the c notch is only partially attached to the plate. Suggestions?

I'm using TCI IFS, bought in 2001, instructions are better these days, see attached link, maybe this helps.

As far as I can remember, they did not go all the way to the front crossmember of frame. After I had my c-notch in place I made a filler piece to reach the crossmember...Jim

Grabbed this one for you. It is at a bit of an angle as I didn't remove the tire.

Cool thanks for the picture. Your notch looks smaller but it looks like the perfect room for the steering.

Great picture thanks, did you trim off that tab area on the radiator support? I don't know that I can describe it but yours has a lot of room in from of that steering rack against the frame.

Also had problems with the rack and joint hitting the crossmember.

Cool, well I didn't know I had to use the .75" spacers on the rack so that made my measurements change :/ lol Had to cut some more up front and also trimmed the radiator support chunk like you guys said you did. I got one side completed today with the filler piece as well so some good progress.

Well I got the c notches and welding all done. Not too shabby for young guy with a grinder and a sawzall haha now I just have to figure out how to build this suspension. Was pretty disappointed it came with no torque specs or instructions.
