Big Back Glass

Anyone know of a vendor to buy a big back glass (factory green tint) from that is less than a month to get? The one I had cut from a vendor is 1/2" too small....after I waited a month to get it - now a replacement would be another month

I do have a factory one but it is aftermarket tinted so I don't know if it is green.

Re: Big Back Glass

Thanks... I'm still looking around.

Here is a question for you guru's, trying to sort out what the issue is: the glass, the opening or the rubber.

Does anyone have the dimensions to a BBW opening? I found the small window dimensions in the historical section but did not see it for the big window. After I put the rubber on the truck opening, the glass can pass through the opening without even touching the rubber gasket... looking for either the measurements of the sheet metal opening or the measurements of the glass itself.

Any help is appreciated.

My issue

Re: Big Back Glass

Thanks...says 13.5 x 59.5, looks like I'm within 1/8" of that. Guess I need to have a few beers and assess the situation further, thanks

Re: Big Back Glass

My opening 1/2 way down measures roughly 59.25 and the glass is roughly 58.75.

Re: Big Back Glass

The glass will never be as big as the opening. There is about a 1/4" all the way around for the seal. Take a look at the way you seal is made and you will see why the glass is the size it is.

Re: Big Back Glass

install the rubber on the glass and thin put the glass in starting at the bottom when the glass is in you put the trim in and that will tighten the glass up

Re: Big Back Glass

I can make a template off an original piece of glass I have in my parts room. Take it to your local glass company and have them cut it off the template. PM me if template wanted.

Re: Big Back Glass

Understand that the glass will not be as big as the opening since the rubber gasket needs a place to go... but 'seems' a bit out of whack

You can see with a piece of rubber on the bottom, the glass lays at a constant height above the sheet metal (surprised at the sloppiness of the cut on the glass). Once that is in place and attempting to place the upper part, you can pass the whole sha-bang through the opening. If you lift the glass 1/4"... the glass follows the same contour as the opening. It 'seems' they might have cut "inside the line" rather than outside...

Have a factory template coming my way to check the size of the glass... maybe they cut the glass on a friday before going home

I just bought a tinted green big back glass for my 66 from LMC after I broke my original glass. It only took a week for it to arrive. I was surprised at how fast it came. It cost $100 which included shipping, which I thought was reasonable. I have not yet put it in but the tint is just like the original. This new one is laminated glass, rather than tempered like my original back window. It is also a hair over 1/4" thick. My original glass was 3/16 thick. I hope to put it in later this week.

Re: Big Back Glass

Install a big back glass for Mike Losh yesterday on Boosted Bertha. Glass measured 14 inches high by 60 inches wide at the widest point towards the bottom. I can send you pictures of the gasket profile and final installed picture of you like?

I just installed the tinted back glass I got from LMC for about $100 which included shipping. I also bought the rubber from LMC to install it, even though I had a perfectly good Precission rubber seal. The LMC rubber was narrower and installed much better than the Precission rubber and it had very little puckering around the bottom corners. In the picture below, the LMC rubber is on the right. The reason I was replacing this glass in the first place was because I was trying to get the excessive puckers out of the Precission rubber and acidently dropped the glass on my third attempt.

The short story is I would highly recommend the LMC glass and also the LMC rubber. I would also use a better lubricant than just soapy water to get the job done.
