68 Custom Camper 50th

I occasionally fly from TN to CA for work and I picked up this Custom Camper in CA last week. It's nicely equipped with 327, Auto, AC, PS, PB, & 50th anniversary paint/interior options.

Was looking at shipping options but decided to drive it home to TN instead. Took it to a local shop in Cupertino to have all fluids changed, new plugs/wires, rear axle serviced, bearings greased, brakes checked, etc.

Happy to say it made the trip with no major issues!

I took the Northern route via I80.
Photos #1 & #2 are in CA. #3 is in NV close to UT. #4 is home in TN.

Very cool truck, the trip from Cali to Tn must of been something to remember. Anniversary gold Customs are fairly rare in any configuration.

Keep us posted as you make improvements.

Re: 68 Custom Camper 50th

Hi 68bowtie, I purchased the truck from the 2nd owner in Hayward, CA in the SF bay area. The original owner purchased the truck and lived in Napa, CA. (Please PM me about the plates.)

You can see the original owner's license plate frame in this photo.

Re: 68 Custom Camper 50th

Thanks for the feedback... I love all the anniversary truck photos. The plan is to keep it as original as possible.

I did some interior cleanup this weekend and uncovered the original golden anniversary seat. It had two covers over it and they had even glued some foam on the original cover. Cleaned up pretty nicely but it shows the original wear... Will definitely want to get an original cover made for it.

Re: 68 Custom Camper 50th

The fuel gauge was not working so I had to keep good track of the mileage in order to know when I was getting low on gas.

According to the Fuel Monitor app I used:

Total miles: 2547
Avg MPG: 12.59 (High 15.7 coming out of WY into NE)
Gallons: 204.426
Total: $529.12

Re: 68 Custom Camper 50th

This truck got almost 15 mpg on the way home, about 150 miles on the freeway, keeping it down to 60 mph.

350, Edelbrock carb, 4-speed tranny, 4:10 rear axle.

Haven't checked mileage since. Haven't been driving this one lately.

Great !!!!!!! You had an adventure, got average mileage
and it was cheaper than hiring a transport for it.

You guys should show each other the last six of the serial number and see how close they were to each other rolling off the assembly line! There are four of these trucks in this thread.
