saving these from the crusher

The 9ft. stepper runs and drives but needs brake work.
The 3/4 ton dumper needs everything but it is complete minus the harness under the hood.
Both are beat up pretty good but they are complete.

Its nice to see it now happening.But when 2004--2008 where around and metal was going for 500.00 a ton.I really doubt many of you where thinking along the lines of saving stuff.here in cali9f i saw over 10,000- 20,000 old cars head to the scrap yard.The good old mighty dollar and greed.

saw car's from 1967-73 Camaro's nova's Chevelles caddys and so many of are old Chevy trucks head in to the shredders.

Plus we have the guys still doing it today buying up trucks and parting them out.

This hobbie is now long gone its all about the greed.

Here on the west coast We have the guys trying to get top dollar for a short bed fleet side for 35,000.But its not a numbers matching truck.

I see RS Camaro's that are some what numbers matching only getting $22,000 but clones people trying to get $50,000

Ya I know supple and demand But if I'm wanting a short bed i want a factory truck in stead of some ones hacked project.


Most of the collectors on here know that there are fewer and fewer barn finds left out there.

Whats left are clunkers need more work then any one has money.

But back in the big money price of 500 to 750.00 a ton for tin and steel all metal when it came to old cars or collector peaces from the 1900's It went to the scrap yardsI know i could not come up with 1200.00 for a 1968 Chevy half ton cus back then they where only worth 300-600.00 back in 2003 i bought 3 camaro's 3 months apart for 400.00 67 300 for a 68 and 700 for a 69 camaro.

The prices jumped when the housing market Jumped.

But getting back to the deal all the good car's that still was worth saving went to china as scrap metal.

But its nice to see there are still some that are being saved but the true ones that should of been saved where in 2004--2008

Never seen a hub like this does it mean it locked in 4x4 ?
Are they replaceable for a regular hub?

Oh an the fell'a threw in a nice set of square body buckets and console too

Post up more pics of that 9ft stepper. I just picked one up a couple months ago and can't get enough. What rear bumper is on it? im trying to find one that wraps around to the rear fenders. Lets see those buckets too please.

I agree Back then I saw a bunch of cars go bye bye.
A good friend and I bought up every second gen camaro laying around. Parted and sold what was left too a local jy.
Two yrs ago that yard closed and crushed everything.
It was a sad time for us guys in the area. There was a cap load of cars in there a lot of 50's-70's cars.
I don't have a bunch pics yet.
The trucks will be here next weekend.as we are both pretty busy this week.

Heres some pics after we got it home, even had the build sheet but dumb$&@ me didnt think to take a pic of it, oh well there will be another time when we go to clean out the tank

the last inspection on the stepper was in 83. pretty sure it was taken off the road and used as a wood truck since then.

saved it from the road salt but not the abuse from throwing logs at it.

the bed is pretty banged/beat up and the rotted wood has a good plate over it.

protecto plate,build sheet(behind the seat),owners manual and a buncha reciepts in the gb.
also suprized too see all the jack hardware in tact includeing the foam bag.

the brakes work but not good. i'll have to go over the system when i have time.

didnt even have a chance too look over the 4x4 yet but i still have that question about those hubs. i've never seen ones like them.
but i also dont have much 4x4 expierance.

since these trucks were so easy the kid is gonna learn how to drive a manual
once it gets brakes

The locking hubs were an option. Most trucks had them and they were listed on the spid. The front hubs are permanently locked with the plates on it. But you can remove the plates and install the optional locking hubs.

Thank you that helps. I just wasn't sure an it'll be awhile till I get the 4x4 running.
I scouted jy's for a under hood harness I found a good one in two different yards. But both were 6cly trucks and one was a gmc (extra head lite plugs) I can get that one for $10. the fell'a is good to me.
If I get the Chevy harness I'll end up paying $40-50.(this fella knows he can get $ for older stuff.

I must've looked at 15-20 trucks in differant yards and only found 2 with good harneses. Most of them were hacked up.
Oh an the 4x4 is gonna need a tank it looks pretty ruff.

The real kicker is I have a extra 67-68 harness but it's a good bit differnt.
Is this a no Brainer or what? I'm trying to fore see any problems putting a 6cly harness in a v8 truck.

+1 what you've got are called drive slugs. I assume Most guys pulled them off back in the day and put aftermarket warns or similar on. My k/20 didn't have hubs from the factory but someone added warns to it. Those are both very cool trucks! I'm glad your saving them, people don't save these trucks much any more.

its kinda hard to believe the stepper (or both )was headed for the scale.
but thats what the fella did/does.
i caught word back in late aug. that he had these.
rite after i unloaded a BUNCH of parts for these trucks....booo
i just couldnt see them turned into hondas/towyotas.


i got a harness for the 4x4 today...$20 complete uncut.

got it most of the way installed but one problem tho... i got no keys for the ignition.
i allready have two replacement ing. switchs but too get the oe one out is a chore........ tomarrow we'll see if she'll guzzell outa a can and move


i have lotsa squarebody selectable hubs around here in the jy's are they interchangable?
67-72 4x4's are very scarce around this way. most were munched by the salt.

you can bet the kid will crap his pants when he drops a clutch peddle in 4 low.

It's always great to save a classic. However, I must say some rare and desireable cars have been "saved" with the best intentions, but in reality rust back into the ground because of stubborn owners who say they'll, "fix it up one day".

These are a cool couple of '71s. I had a '69 C/30 same color paint. The hubs interchange through '75. They are 3/4t-only...larger diameter w/bigger bolts

Thanks "k" the yard I'm pulling parts from has some hubs around that year we gotta go back an get the tank outa of a gmc there it's really clean but a pain in the butt the way it's situated.

I forgot about the rain today not much gonna get done outside. It's OK give me some time in the garage with the 67.

I agree about some "saving" cars. I could kick myself for selling my 73 Pontiac ventura sprint too the fell'a who bought it.its been sitting in a field for 3 yrs untouched. I gotta see it every time we go to a jy.
If I would known that would be it's future I wouldn't of sold it too him.

Im not attached too these trucks but i will spent some time on them. We allready have the two 67's here and the wife isn't happy about the back yard being full.

The kid an I were pondering making the stepper 4x4. Using the two trucks the body parts on the black one is pretty bad
But the frame and drive train look great.
But who knows if the engine even runs yet.the guy I got them from told me the motor was locked up but it isn't.
I'LL have to get the ignition switch out and try running it off a gas can for now.
