Ok, I got a job, as the title says, and my truck still won't run when it is cold, and I don't have half an hour after school to warm it up to drive ten minutes down the road. The distributer isn't the problem, it smells of very rich fuel when it tries to run, and it often backfires. The ignition system, as I said, isn't at fault, becuase it all runs just fine once it is warm, which leads me to believe that it has something to do with the automatic choke. Does anyone have any diagrams of how it works, where all the vaccume fittings are, and how it affects the carb? I have today to get it running, there are no other vehicles in the house that I can use, other than the 03 diesel, which my father REALLY doesn't want to insure me on for obvious reasons... (sitting outside in the open just waiting to get vandalized, etc)

It would help if we knew what carb your running. Quadra Jet, Edelbrock, Holley, ect ? Does it have electric choke or sring style down in the intake?

whats the weather like where you live? If it gets real cold you'll probably want a choke. But for temporary use, you could just wire the choke open. It sounds like the choke is probably sticking and not opening when its supposed to.

It it in a heated garage, so I don't think I would need the choke at home, but I may need it at work unless I can snag a spot with an outlet for my block heater...

I'm not sure what type of carb I have, it was installed with the new engine before, and only my grandfather would know (its too covered with junk to be able to tell)

What bothers me is that it has been working until I have it a tuneup a week or so back, so I am thinking I unplugged something...

check for any vaccume leaks, that could cause a problem untill warm up. Maybe you unpuged a hose or just rooting around in there broke a junction or cracked somthing.

This site might help you ID your carb, http://www.carbs.net/carbinf.htm It sounds like your choke may be opening to early. After a cold start, try closing the choke plate by hand until there is a 1/4-5/16 gap to the airhorn to see if it smoothes out. If after partially blocking airflow, it idles a bit smoother, the vacuum signal may be too low at idle causing the choke to open to soon or maybe the spring is shot ( too weak ) and is coming off too early. I have a buddy that went thru all that and replaced the choke unit & bingo, problem solved.
If it's an electric choke, did it get unplugged? Hope you get it fixed soon, that -40 weather ain't that far away.
