Automatic to Manual/death to rice rocket

I want to go from an automatic tranny to a manual in my 67 short step. I know i will have to fab up the cluch peddle and make a hole in the floor for the shifter. But I am sure there will many more things to change that I am not thinking of. Will i need a new/relocated crossmember, bigger trans hump in the cab, or anything else?

Also what trans would u guys go to. Im running a 350/350. I dont know if it would be possible but i think it would be kick a$$ to run somekinda 5 speed something to help me go fast.

One of the main motivations for this is my friend has 03 civic and we raced a while back when I had a 327, and he smoked me, I really want to beat that little rice rocket and i know u guys want me to as well.

thanks

For drag racing, a automatic is better IMO. Go to the strip and see what most guys are running.....it will be an automatic. If you want to spank rice rockets, a 350/350 isn't a bad combo. If you want to go fast, do some motor mods, or install lower rear end gears.

Anyway, driving a manual tranny is fun, and if you can shift them fast, they will run. Plus you don't need to use a higher-stall converter for a larger cam as you would on a auto. You can rev the engine to any speed you desire and dump the clutch.

You can get a 5-speed out of a later model P/U, or even a six speed. I know of one board member that has done the 5 speed swap (Huck), crazy longhorn is using a Richmond six speed, and another member is using a T56 six speed out of a Camaro.

Just get the clutch pedal and linkage assembly from a 67/72 truck . Place an ad in the parts page alot of members have converted to auto so you should be able to get almost all the parts you need for a reasonable price . You may need a high hump also it may have a small cover located on the driver engine side firewall with two small screws . That cover is what hides the hole for the clutch rod . Clutch rod to tranny you may have to fabricate .
