Flywheel removal
Was wondering if anyone has ever removed their flywheel without removing the bell housing? Is it possible to remove it out the bottom after removing the inspection plate?
Thanks Ron |

Re: Flywheel removal
I think it could as well but I just wonder what the angle to get it out would be like I would be worried if the torque converter would catch it...
Now I need to give it a try to the garage! For science! |

Re: Flywheel removal
Well no converter on a clutch truck. On an automatic with a converter you have to pull the trans to get the flexplate out.

Re: Flywheel removal
I dropped the flywheel out of my K10 last year without having to remove the bellhousing.

Re: Flywheel removal
just did it,remove transmission, remove pressure plate, clutch disk, throw out bearing and clutch fork, watch out everything is heavy and you can smash a finger or worse,I had to pound on flywheel {soft hammer} to get it to break loose from crank,I put a couple pieces of wire from bellhousing to flywheel to keep it from falling, had to jiggle it out,but yes it can be done!

Re: Flywheel removal
Screw a longer bolt into the top hole in the flywheel before you try and work it off. Then when you work off off the crank it will stay right there. When you put it back on take another long bolt ( about 2" long) and cut the head off and take a hack saw and cut a grove in the end. Screw it in the crank and hang the flywheel on it when you put it back in. Tap it on the crank spud and start a couple of bolts. Screw the long one out. Makes the job much easier.

Re: Flywheel removal
Thanks everyone for the great ideas. Was hoping it would come out, the idea of putting a longer bolt in to catch it is a great idea as those darn things are heavy when your on your back. Should have had it resurfaced when I had everything apart, but was getting a lot of flac on how much money it was taking. Some people just dont understand....
