I can only keep one truck, which one would YOU keep?
Hi guys, ive got one of the best problems a guy could have, ive got two great trucks and can only keep one.
The first is a 69gmc 4x4, which is pretty clean, and has a 4 speed with granny low gears, which is fairly inconvenient to drive daily, but ive had her for a couple years and am attached. i also painted her myself, and its not the best job, just something to keep in mind. Basically, she's a clean ranch truck, which you shouldn't be driving on the highway much because of the gearing. if the 4 speed was more convenient i would keep this one i think. The second is a 72 chevy, i just picked up for 1000 bucks. mechanically, it is amazing, rebuilt engine and auto tranny, and drives like a dream. it is also quite rusty on the surface, but the frame appears fine, an the sheet metal is not rotted out at all. i also happen to appreciate the look of a good old farm truck, lots of history, and she's a one owner all original. its got working AC, and the dash is uncut. its also 2wd, with coil springs in front, which is nice but i prefer the look of those 4x4s, and its nice to have occasionally. so I'm conflicted, which would you guys keep? I'm going to use it for daily driving. any opinions are appreciated, thanks you all! |

What do you want? Sell them both and buy the truck that you truly want.

Re: I can only keep one truck, which one would YOU keep?
I would keep the 4x4, mainly because I would not consider owning a truck unless it has four wheel drive.
Your situation is a bit different. I'm assuming the 4x4 has low final gears. The fact that it has a granny low is of no concern because in normal driving, you skip granny and start in second gear. Your 2wd truck is mechanically sound and has a good working A/C, and you don't mind the crusty appearance. And you want a comfortable DD. So I'd say do the opposite of what I would do. Sell the 4x4 and enjoy the '72 Chevy. You can always paint it some day if you get tired of its patina.

I would go with GMC. You've got the 4-eye factor going for you...dont see as many of those around. And that's from a Chevy guy. Plus you said you like the 4 wheel drive look. 4 speed is old school...and that's a good thing in my book.

Re: I can only keep one truck, which one would YOU keep?
I'd keep the 4x4. It looks cleaner, and 4wd is a little harder to come by than the overly plentiful long bed 2wd's, at least up here in the northern part.
The only thing that hurts is the gas mileage with the 4wd over its 2wd counterpart, but if you purchased these things for gas mileage, we have a whole different discussion ahead!!!!! |

Re: I can only keep one truck, which one would YOU keep?
Love both the trucks, but if I had to choose one for a daily driver I would go with the patina one if it is more mechanically sound and better geared. Not that any of these are really complex to fix on the side of the road. (been there done that. Worst date ever.) But it is nice to haul stuff. And if you have lots of snow, 4x4 is nice.

I'd keep the GMC! But I live in rural Missouri and hunt, trap, fish a lot so 4x4 is a must for me. Love both trucks and sorry you have to get rid of one

I would keep the GMC. If for no other reason than it doesn't need rust repair. What's the latest saying.... Buy the nicest vehicle you can afford. Restoration gets expensive!

Re: I can only keep one truck, which one would YOU keep?
I think the real issue here is the daily driver part... Of course most of us would rather keep the GMC but which would I rather drive daily? The Chevy..

Re: I can only keep one truck, which one would YOU keep?
Keep the GMC and sell the chevy as its too nice to part out.
But concider and plan ahead for the posibility of swapping out parts later on to make the GMC what you want, which i'm assuming is an automatic and different gearing in the rear end, then shoot for that later when you find a good canadate in a junk yard..

GMC with better gears and/or OD trans.
I see a lot more than patina on the other truck.

Re: I can only keep one truck, which one would YOU keep?
I'd keep the 1/2t 4wd. I doubt it's gears are as low as the 3/4t. I don't mind shifting, that's driving to me. I've never ridden a motorcycle with automatic transmission. I think the gearing issue is perceived. I understand some people don't want to shift, but that truck is fine for the hiway. And you can put even better gears in the 1/2t. But you might not like stop & go as much.

I would keep the 4x4. Gears can always be swapped. Its definitely more rare and will likely see a higher value in the future.

Re: I can only keep one truck, which one would YOU keep?
I would also keep the 4x4 but then having one I guess I am probably being a bit on the biased side of that. Agree, I think the 4x4 will keep/increase in value better than the 2wd will. Not a lot of 4x4s from back then, see many more 2wds. My '71 is not a daily anymore but it used to be my work/commute truck for quite some time. Gas mileage does suck but but keep it down to around 55-60 and not really terrible. The cool factor helps when you pull into a gas station and folks comment on "nice 4 wheeler" I have 3:07 gearing. Used to be a 4 spd, now a 350TH, getting old and bad knees is not a good combo for a clutch daily commuter, LOL.

Re: I can only keep one truck, which one would YOU keep?
I'd keep the 72. If you said mechanically it is perfect, keep it. I love the chevys more than the GMC's, and just think, you'll get a lot more for the GMC, and now you have a blank canvas for the 72. I would keep the 72 it's a good looking truck
