My first truck, my first post!
Hello all! Glad to be a part of the classic truck hobby! My name's Jake but most people call me puff (for almost obvious reasons). I inherited my dad's 1972 Chevy Cheyenne camper specail in 2007 when he passed away (rest in piece) and have since been doing whatever I can to get this beautiful machine road worthy again. I've ran into a few snags here and there, such as the missing drive shaft ha-ha or some melted wires, never got the keys ect. But none the less I keep at it. As I said it was my dad's truck and his dad's before so I really want to restore and then build this truck into a tribute for my late father.

Welcome! You have come to the right place. If you look at the emblems on the fender or door it will probably say "Custom Camper" instead of Camper Special. Just keep plugging away at it and you will get it all sorted out. As far as the keys, if you pull the lock out of the passengers side door it may have the code number for the keys stamped into it (see picture below for code number location) and you can take that number to your local locksmith and he can cut you a key that should fit the ignition. If it doesn't have a code number stamped into it he can disassemble the lock cylinder and make a key by reading the tumblers in the lock. The doors and ignition were all keyed the same from the factory. If you don't have anyone in your area that can do that let me know.... LockDoc

Re: My first truck, my first post!
Thank you locdoc! And I do believe your right actually. Unfortunately she doesn't have emblems on the sides. Only the glove box and it says custom camper special. I'll post a pic when I get home. I've already replaced the ignition switch so I have a brand new key for that and my grandfather has a box of old gm keys in which I might be able to find a usable door key, if not I will definitely give that a try! Right now I'm in the market for a one piece driveline. I have the th350 trans with a 127 inch WB.

Remember that 72" is the recommended maximum length for a one piece driveshaft. Most places won't make one longer than that. LockDoc

I was actually unaware of that fact ha-ha I'm not sure what the exact measurement is from the output shaft to the receiver on the rear end is, I'll have to check that as well

Re: My first truck, my first post!
*UPDATE* spent all day trying to trace the melted wire and found that the original owner (my grandpa Anderson) had connected the power lead for a camper or something to one of the tail light wires which is why it melted. He obviously figured out that's not a good idea because I found a wire with an in line fuse ran to the camper harnes. The harnes, cb antenna and all other unnecessary wires have since been removed. The cluster**** of wires behind the guage cluster has been sorted through, rewrapped and reran in its original path. The door switch wires need to be replaced with enough wire to run them with the rest of the wire harnes (going to connect to my first modification, a complete interior "halo" of multi colored l.e.D lighting set to come on with an open door or a switch inside which will directly effect the second modification, painting all the accent pieces in matte white plastidip thus changinging colors with the lights on the ceiling!)

Welcome to the site. Cool 3rd generation family truck. Looks like you're on the right track cleaning up the lose and spliced wires. Enjoy!

Re: My first truck, my first post!
QUESTION! My truck has two 25 gallon sadle tanks so I don't really need the 16 gallon tank behind the seat and I'd like to replace it with a subwoofer enclosure. Would there be any adverse effects of this? I know I'd need a remote fuel pump to run the gas from the side tanks and the fuel guage won't work but would removing the fuel tank cause something important to not work or fail over time?

Re: My first truck, my first post!
Yeah thats right. When I got the new ignition switch it cane with the square key. It's supposed to have a round for the doors but when my dad passed he didn't tell my mom where to find the keys and she didn't think to look.

Nope, for ALL '67-'72' Chevy & GMC pickups the doors and ignition were keyed the same from the factory..... The '67's and a few early '68's came with the small Octagon head key (Left side) and all the rest came with the rectangular head key (right side). If your truck has the oval head keys for the doors someone has replaced the door locks with '73 up pickup door locks or locks from a passenger car.... LockDoc

Re: My first truck, my first post!
I'm not sure what I'd have for door keys exactly. I just know its supposed to have two separate keys with different heads. Another question though, how do I get the old ignition switch out of the dash without the original key? I unscrewed it from the chrom dish piece that goes in the dash but the head of the barrel won't let the switch go through the chrome nut thing

It is not an easy task if you don't have a key and the door locks are not original. You will probably have to drill it out. The ignition cylinder has to come out before you can get the chrome bezel off to get the switch out and you have to have the key to do that. LockDoc

Re: My first truck, my first post!
That's what I thought about the barrel. And I found out that I have air shocks and I found a useable tailgate. The trim doesn't match but its coming off. It's not permanent though.

Re: My first truck, my first post!
Welcome from Maryland. Nice truck and 3rd gen still in the family makes it that much cooler. I had a similar problem when i got my truck with the keys, I had a square ignition key and a round lock key that didin't work anything. I bought a 3 piece set from flEbay. I've done a LED set-up in mine as well, but with UV purple (blacklight) and a semi-gloss gun metal color with flat black trim on my interior. I put clear UV reflective paint on anything i wanted to stand out ( gauge needles, radio knobs, window and door handles, headlight n wiper knobs, and high beam button). I'm working on a spare set of gauge numbers n lines on the plastic piece from the gauges and the auto shift indicator now and gonna try using UV LEDs to light them up. Heads up warning! once you start driving these old beauties, you'll probably never want to drive a newer truck again. They are as addicting as they can be frustrating, but the 420 keeps the anxiety/frustration in check and makes the nostalgia/enthusiasm that much stronger. This forum will be your best resource and the people on here are more than happy to help in any way they can. I have come to love it and can say that this is the best group of people I have ever come across. welcome aboard and look forward to seeing you truck come back to life.

Re: My first truck, my first post!
Thank you cherokeejohn for the welcome and you intior sounds amazing! Ive been driving old school chevies since I learned to drive my grandpa's 67 c10 305 4 speed. Never driven anything newer that 74 except my 2000 Ford escort zx2 which I had green L.E.D lights on the ceiling and tan intior which made everything bright green. Or my 96 olds auroa 4.0. Which I had 36 color L.E.D strips along the bottom of the dash and along the door frames.
