Does using 2 different tuners = 2 HP Tuners credits?

I was just curious, since the tuner I used bought the "credit" from HP Tuners to tune my ECM, would i have to pay for another "credit" If I had someone else tune it, or I sold the truck and the buyer used someone different? I'm kicking around the idea of selling my '86 I just finished and maybe building another one.

Your Vin and License # are licensed to the HPT Dongle, not the software itself.

SO i am a noob, pardon the ignorance of my question.

I am contemplating buying the HPT getup and have wondered this same thing. your answer makes no since to me since i dont know much (ie. anything) about the HPT getup.

so let me ask the same question above only different.

WHO has the 'dongle' for my ecm tune? the guy who programmed it or is it somehow in the ecm?

I have read on the HPT website that the credits can be used for (example) 2001 chevy 5.3 ecm. can i program this same ecm multiple times with out the necessity to purchase more credits? and likewise, can i program more than one ecm from/for the same vehicle?

i have been considering tuning two ecms, one for economy, and another for performance. must i purchase a total of 4 credits to do this?

and to expand on the other persons question, if john tunes my ecm, and i send it to steve for another tune, who controls the dongle/license stuff?

sorry for the rambling but i have been wondering this for weeks now with no expansion on the topic from any definitive source. i have emailed HPT with no response.

thanks in advance,

-Izzy

OK, I know the same guy that tuned it to begin with can go back and tune it again and again. If I understand what you are saying, if I sold the truck and the buyer took it to someone else, they would have to pay for another credit or Dongle. It would be the same Vin# but a different license#. I am assuming each tuner gets a different license # when they purchase the HPT software, and that is the licensed # you are referring to.

Yes you would need to pay for more credits. I actually think it requires 2 credits.
I have hptuners so I can tune my truck as much as I want, I also did my buddies so we can touch it up anytime also. If I take my truck somewhere they would need to purchase (or use my dongle) to tune it.

Re: Does using 2 different tuners = 2 HP Tuners credits?

For clarification, the "dongle" is the actual box and cable component. It contains a flash memory/ROM which logs and stores the software license # (i.e the tuners credentials), as well as the vehicle vin/ECM.

The reason it can be a little tough to explain is that HPt uses different credit amounts for certain things, and different credit amounts for different vehicles entirely. It is (or was) possible to buy a license for EVERY GenIII truck, but its VERY expensive. The idea being specialty shops could purchase a master dongle and only use it for one type.

If you buy your own HPT, it will come with a few credits (at least enough to do your vehicle on the base package). Your ECM/Vin will then be stored on that dongle. You can tune your own truck with as many flashes as you'd like, and some folks will find tuners willing to use the customers equipment.

Most don't bother owning their own dongle unless they really want to tune themselves, or are running a setup that needs to be constantly altered.

Re: Does using 2 different tuners = 2 HP Tuners credits?

Thanks guys. Just wanted to know what to tell someone if they buy the truck. I guess now I just need to figure out how much to ask for it.

Re: Does using 2 different tuners = 2 HP Tuners credits?

............ O K, what if I want to "look at" the tune on my truck (download) and compare it to another truck, both unlocked and change the tune on the first truck to match the second truck.
Both truck engines are 5.3 2003, almost same tire size (height) and almost the same gear, taller tires Vs lower gear, higher gear Vs. shorter tires.
I like the tune in in one truck better than the other, can I have them match to see if there is a difference
Both trucks have a credit

Re: Does using 2 different tuners = 2 HP Tuners credits?

Open the second tune as the compare file, and use Microsoft excel to "Paste Special" into the other tune file.

Works for VE and spark tables etc. You can't really "copy" the whole tune..or at least I've never really considered it beneficial if you could..but you can use the comparison as a base file. There are enough differences even on two stock vehicles thats its worth going through it anyway.

When you get a mail order tune, they basically open your stock tune file...then open a finished tune on the same vehicle (or as close as they have). They cheat-sheet off the done tune.
