Gauge restoration

Trying to save money on my dash and gauges. The numbers are faded (1967). Does anyone know what type of paint I can use to touch it up? Don't want to buy a new one for the small amount of work that I think could fix this up, but it looks like a special paint (to reflect at night?).
thanx

Re: Gauge restoration

Read this thread for some suggestions.

EDIT: Sorry, I just reread your post and see that you are asking about paint for the gauge face numbers and other markings rather than the needles.

Yeah, but I would love to be able to look at it and say I did it myself, and saved some bucks.

Trying to 'paint' those numbers is almost impossible. You could use a toothpick if you have great patience, but no brush will allow you to keep sharp edges on the numbers. They are silk screened on when they are made by the factory to make them sharp. There are replacement faces available that you can use to replace the ones you have that use the correct paint, fonts and colors.

Try here: http://www.whitegauges.net/pages/Fac...r-Changes.html
Choose make, model and year then select "Face Color Changes" to get the stock black background. $19.95 for an entire set for your truck.

Re: Gauge restoration

I can see this is going to cost me money

One last shot, if I could get a paint that would work, could I paint it using a stencil?

Those face color changes look cool, Fitz, but I can't tell if it's the numbers as well. And they cost 30.00.

when I put in my 1967 c10, all that came up was the lens for 50.00.

Re: Gauge restoration

Yes you can paint them, but the type of paint you use will determine durability. Really, you can only add paint to rubbed off portions, not paint complete new numbers and letters. Modelers paint intricate details and straight lines often, but it's dependent on your steady hand and practice. Go to a hobby shop and browse their paints and brushes. Do NOT use a cheap nylon bristle brush. You need to use a nice "hair brush".

Model Master makes Acrylics, and Enamels and I'm sure you'll have to mix a white and a teal to get the right color. Flat paint is easier to use than gloss or semi.

Best of luck!
