Tailgate styles

Is this a stock tailgate option for a square body?
And if so will it bolt on a 78? I have the wide trim band in the middle now and like this stamped painted lettering look.

Re: Tailgate styles

Had one like that on my 75. It was beat to crap so replaced with later year version I found at the local pull a part for $30.

The ones from different years will interchange IF and it is an important IF, you also get all of the mounting and latching pieces bolted to both bed walls. The mounting stuff does differ for various years. There is at least one thread that shows the year differences for tailgates.

Re: Tailgate styles

I've heard word that all the early one, till somewhere in the early 80's, had this stamped on all original Chevrolet tailgates... band or not. But not sure if this is true.

Found mine off craigslist for $100 local pickup. It had been removed from a truck brand new and the owner had a 5th wheel gate installed. The one that came with my truck when I bought it was trashed and had no stamping..prob was an aftermarket.

My tailgate looks like those last pictures. Any chance the stamped letters are underneath the trim attachment panel? it's a 78

Re: Tailgate styles

I just bought a GMC that had the full stainless band, pulled it off and it was stamped GMC underneath. Not sure if Chevy is the same

Re: Tailgate styles

Don't forget the one off GMC tailgate too from 73-74. Those are pretty few and far between now.

Re: Tailgate styles

I have a '86 gmc 4x4 ,when I bought the truck in had a Chevrolet stamped tail gate. In the last few years I have bought a couple wide gmc bands for the tailgate, I have one GMC narrow band. " I like the look of the narrow band better" . I also bought an older gate for the narrow band, the older gate is stamped and it has the holes to mount the band. And yes I am going to have to change the gate mounts.
