Anyone bolt their outer grill to the grill brackets?

I had to drill out the rivets holding the outer grill to the grill brackets. The grill brackets were just too rusty and one was really trashed.

Now I probably could re-revit it back together but I'd rather bolt it. I asked this question before and was directed to buy these bolts but I am not sure how they'd ever tighten up, as the bolt head has no slot for a screwdriver.

I'd like to use a pan headed bolt with a slot, short, yet wide enough to take up the hole.

Anyway, what did others do? Pics would be nice. I would like to reassemble my grill this month.

I am probably the one who suggested rivet screws. Trust me. They tighten just fine. They have serrations (there's probably another technically correct term) under the head that grab very well. There's no need to use crappy looking pop rivets or slotted screws.

Since I've recommended them on several threads, I recently took a picture of them installed.

Well buddy, I really want to thank your for your persistence. I have not tried these and I bought just what you linked in that older thread.

I will give them a shot and thanks for both trying to help me again (in the face of my doubts) and for showing a pic. The pic looks great.

I should get the grill back this month. I should have everything ready to go for reassembly by then. I'll try and get pics.

But I have a question, what keeps the heads from turning and not allowing it to tighten up?

Try them. You'll like them.

Serrations/teeth/grips in the mating surface of the head. As the nut snugs up they bite in. It's not like you are torquing them.

Pick the size you want. I think mine are the 1st ones linked below. The smaller 8-32 head size may be closer to the original rivets.

On what I bought (what as linked some weeks ago) only the nut has the serrated washer, the bolt has nothing.

I just put what I have into the grill bracket (outer grill still at the polisher) and it tightened up by hand and the bolt did not spin! So, it looks like my fears were unfounded.

I know this is a bit old, but maybe for someone else, I used nut rivets as well, but used stainless button head screw.

I also used them with socket cap screws on both my shifter rings.

Often, when you're lucky, you can snug up a nut finger tight and finish off tightening with a wrench without ever touching the nut. Especially when using lock washers. Removing is another story. But with these screw-in rivets, you get them snug and the grips on the washer are all it takes to bind enough so it doesn't turn "as it gets tighter and tighter" using the wrench

I have used those smooth head rivets on a lot of grills from the 50's car grill to a 68 Chevy truck grill, they work great
