Homemade Grille Guard? - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

Ive been searching this forum and found a few pictures, but has anybody made their own grille guard for these trucks? i know there are a few dealer option ones out there but need/want something a little beefier. Also any pictures of these on C20/ 2wd pickups? wanting to build one myself and looking for ideas/plans and pictures. My idea is to maybe use a factory bumper as a start to build a ranchhand style and curious on opinions about it. any help would be greatly appreciated

Funny you should ask, I have contacted 4 different people and asked then if they could do a paper trace of the side of a guard for me so i could get the shape correct around the bumper ect, all 4 said sure they could do it so i sent my mailing address and said i'd be glad to send them some money to reimburse the postage, all 4 of them never came thru for me..

Don't forget the beefie ones got to bolt to the frame.

Yes i'd like to make one someday.

I have a Luverne that I bought off a guy in Washington State a couple of years ago. Once my truck is running, I intend to put it on.

I am learning to weld and I am sure that with a plasma cutter, welder, and oxy-acetylene torch, one could make their own grill guard pretty easily.

I have made the push bar type with 3/8" side plates and 2 1/2" tube. I only made one to fit a factory bumper and the rest were on trucks I also made stronger bumpers on. There is a carpentry tool made for copying moulding profiles and general scribe cutting that works like a charm here, a profile gauge. It looks like Eastwood sells them (through Jeg's) for auto use

My thought is to take a bumper and build around it, making a front end replacement. if i could draw worth a hoot, id share a picture of my idea. but i suck at it soo.. i researched and ranchhands are made with 16 gauge steel and it looks like my stock bumper is also 16 gauge. i want to use channel iron for the uprights and build from there. ill try to get a picture to explain

Ten Ring, That would be great to get a template drawing to mark out the side plates. I,ve rounded up a overhead camper to put in mine and I want to add a Brushguard/Deerbouncer on the front.

I have a push guard that was installed on my 68 when sold new by Open Road, but I think you are wanting something else?

I think you are better off going with a CUCV style guard because the 72(I'm assuming 72 by your call sign) is closer to a square body in shape than modern. So no wrap around contour needed. I am in bumper contemplation myself; I am going to install a winch soon.

something like this but using a stock bumper as a staring point. trying to make it look like it belongs on the truck and not something newer that was made to fit. i like what you have cooper but want something with more protection
