Casting numbers locations, engine identification

I have no clue what engine I've got. All I know is its a v8. The PO told me its a 327 that was dropped in, however, most of the stuff he's told me has been false.

All of the searching I've done has told me to look at the ledge behind the heads for the casting numbers to identify my displacement. But when I went to go check it out, I discovered there were no "ledges." Where the valve cover meets there is a straight drop off, no ledge.

Does anyone know where else I can look to find these numbers?

In front of the passenger side cylinder head. There will be a flat "pad" with numbers stamped on it just in front of the valve cover. It is part of the machined deck surface of the engine block.

The rear will be a cast in number on the engine block on the drivers side on the rear flange where the tranny bellhousing bolts up. Its behind the cylinder head.

They will probably both be covered with eons of crud and oil...

The "ledge" is where the transmission bolts to the block( for the casting #'s and date). Just below the block deck.

Thanks guys! I didn't realise that the ledge would be that far down. As you can see, I'm new to working on anything(that's the reason I bought this truck, to learn after all). I was able to find the numbers on the rear drivers side, 3970010. It got dark on me before I could hunt down the others. Thanks a lot!

That casting number tells us it's either a 350 or a 327. So you will need the numbers off of the front pad to get the "suffix code" to tell us what it really is.

"Pictures are worth a thousand words" just sayin'. It would be nice if you could get head casting #'s also.I realize this takes pulling the valve covers,but if they are leaking,the valve cover gaskets, ?eh!

An 010 block is almost always going to be a 350.

I know there are some references to some being 327 but I would like to see one because a lot of 010 blocks are 4 bolt mains.

Remember they didn't put VINs or sequence numbers on truck blocks, so all you'll ever know is whether its a truck block intended for that year, carb, and trans.

What am I missing? Did I find the correct spot, and is everyone looking at the smaller font numbers on the left, or the bigger on the right that shows CCC? (my first picture) I was also told this must not be the original engine, so it could be any year.
