a question for the power steering pump experts....
Hey guys! I am in the process of trying to convert my saginaw pump from a banjo fitting over to a AN fitting. I am having issues with finding the proper fitting. I purchased a 5/8"-18 to 6AN fitting but it doesn't seem right. The problem is the new fitting seems to tighten down on the flare inside the pump far to soon.
Here is a pic of the new fitting on the left and the original banjo fitting that came with the pump. Here is a pic of the inside of the pump showing the male flare and a pic of the fitting in place hand tight. Shouldn't the hex /shoulder part of the fitting bottom out against the back of the pump housing, thus allowing the use of a crush washer. Or does the fitting rely solely on the flares inside for a seal???? What am I missing here? |

Re: a question for the power steering pump experts....
I'm definitely no expert, but flare fittings just rely on the flare. I have a similar adapter on my saginaw power steering pump to use -6 AN lines plumbed to my hydroboost. It looks about like yours does.

Re: a question for the power steering pump experts....
That's what I always thought. Just seems like I should get more then 2-3 turns on the fitting before it tightens against the flare. seems like it will come loose.

Re: a question for the power steering pump experts....
Banjo fittings require crush washers on each side to seal correctly. Inverted flair fittings only require the tapered areas to match for a seal.

Re: a question for the power steering pump experts....
That unthreaded area on the end of the thread looks like it is for a bubble flare and/or metric fitting. While working on my brakes I found out there are 4 types of flare fittings. Inch inverted flare like we use on our older US vehicles, Japan inverted flare with metric thd, Europe bubble flare with metric thd and British bubble flare with inch thd. I found this out when I blindly grabbed different lengths of brake line at Farm & Fleet one day and naturally got every type but the US inverted flare. The bubble flare have the tip without thd out to the end.

Re: a question for the power steering pump experts....
Hey thanks for all the responses guys. Here's a better pick of the flare. When I tighten the fitting in hand tight, I can feel it bottom out on the flare inside the pump, so it is definetly making contact. Now wether or not it is the proper flare is now in question. Secondly it seems as if the fitting would come loose with only 3 turns on the fitting.
You would think there would be a specific fitting that would go with this pump. I guess I can always just use the origininal banjo fitting. I just wanted to put a 45 degree fitting on the pump so I can run my lines a little better. |

Re: a question for the power steering pump experts....
The last picture you have posted is indeed an inverted flare fitting. Just tighten it down and you should be good to go.

Re: a question for the power steering pump experts....
That fitting looks like a foreign inverted flare fitting. Probably British bubble flare with inch thread. US inverted flare does not have the non threaded end on it like you show in the picture. The threads are inch, but with the tip not having threads , it will bottom out before you get enough thread engagement.

Re: a question for the power steering pump experts....
If you search for inverted flare to an fitting, they all look like that.
I agree not enough thread engagement.

Re: a question for the power steering pump experts....
I think those pumps normally used a inverted flare hard line, which would allow more of the nut to thread in, since the flare end would be shallower than the I/F part of the AN fitting. If you're getting three full turns with the AN fitting into the pump, you're good. Once you snug them up, the are set. Make sure you support your line so it doesn't flop around and try to back the fitting out.
