Pontiac 347 in a Series 2
Afternoon all...
After getting my enthusiasm back for my Project I'm getting on quite well! BUT- some idiot designer in the fifties decided to stuff the starter and solenoid on the left side of the engine.. damn- I have a Hydramatic box- and really want to keep it all together is I can. My issue is I'm fitting Jaguar IFS and IRS onto the truck as it works well on my 48 Chevy Fleetline.... Anyway- the stater and particularly the solenoid is exactly where the pinion sticks out off the rack... oh dear! I've looked around the net and can't find any mini-starters like the millions available for Chevy's! Has anyone else hit this problem? I may be able to move the rack nearer to the cross-member, BUT I'm looking at easiest options first. I'd appreciate any advice- thanks very much! Rich |

It might be easier to change the truck to right hand steer than fight the starter issue.
I'd wonder if any of the similar size cars made in UK or readily available in your sources have a rack that is more compatible with the starter position. Close to the same width and what not with a more compatible location or angle for the shaft going into the rack.

Post a pic. I am having a hard time seeing the rack pinion that far back, do you mean the solenoid is line with the steering shaft and rack shaft? Go take a look at Borgsens site, they have a tech manual. Around page 90 they have information and suggestions for different steering shaft configurations. I have seen some pretty convoluted ones that wrap around headers, etc.

Lessee....

Here's an image, don't really want to go down the right-hand drive route, looks wrong to me and like my dash as it is.. I have added an image if this helps!
Annoying.. but at the moment I have a starter OR steering.. I didn't realise the mini- starters were cross drilled too.. thanks- I'll look into that one! Cheers Rich |

There might even be enough material to drill your own holes if needed.
There are some other options, maybe. This marine catalog has a few different ones that could serve as examples. http://www.cpperformance.com/api-cat...d_starters.pdf There are newer replacements for old numbers. Look at P. 53, specifically the 10059ND. It appears to put the solenoid closer to the block slightly. P. 54 has another version of the Hitachi mini starter. I'm sure the cost of these are quite high but you may be able to use the technical information to locate less expensive versions. You can also look at this http://www.electricmotorsvc.com/pdf/...07_Str_Cat.pdf Pictures of End Frame housings (Nose) for the OE type 10MT starter begin on Page 324 and continue through P. 331. There are various PMGR end frame housings as well. The PMGR starter is the newer style unit that GM uses currently. You can use the images and dimensions to try and locate a nose that fits then get a starter number from the listing and check other critical information (voltage, rotation, drive gear teeth). I think you have a Chevy starter in there or a non Hydromatic starter for Pontiac . The correct one should have the solenoid at about 10 degrees from the top bolt hole not at 90 degrees to it. You need the one for Hydromatic.

Apologies... haven't been on here for a while- all sorted now!
Total change of direction that some will and some won't like... can't win 'em all anyway! Chassis has had all the axles swapped- now Jaguar XJS IFS and IRS, so handling and brakes will be top notch, decided on an engine change as one came up for the right cash.. So sitting between the rails now is a rather splendid Bentley Turbocharged V8- coupled to a TH400 autobox, easiest motor I have ever fitted.. what do you think nice or nasty? Absolutely no idea how to add images on here- as I'm more of a hammer and chisel worker- sorry! Looks well though! Rich |

Could be worse.... how about putting a Chevolet badge on a Dawoo, ?
