Question for 86 k10 owners

I'm thinking about replacing the stock quadrajet on my 86. I know this carb is specific to this year. It has some sort of electronic thing built in to it. I'm wondering if anyone here has made a conversion and what did you use?

Hey, that's my carb in your pic! I'm practically famous...

I'm not sure what you are asking, but I think that Edelbrock makes an emissions legal replacement carb that gets rid of that thing. It is the 1904.

I've got that on my '86 'burb and was wondering just last night what it was. My truck was bought her locally so I don't think it's limited to Cali.

There is one problem. The statment is not really true about the 50 state legal. All the replacement carbs say "NOT FOR USE ON COMPUTER CONTROLED VEHICLE" meaning if you have one of those electronic carbs, you can't use it as a direct replacement. That also means if you have a CA truck, they are illegal.

Calif has more emissions stuff on them. I knew in CA you definitly had it, but I didn't know if it was federal too. If it was federal, I think it was an 86 only thing.

Slonaker,

Yeah it is your carb. I used the pic from last time you helped with the wiring. Hope you didn't mind. It was still on my computer. The carb still runs rough, so I'm thinking about buying a new one. Thanks for the info

One other question. The quadrjet has a solenoid on the side of it the kicks up the idle when the AC is on. I noticed that the edelbrock doesn't. Think it should still work with AC trucks?

I'm not sure, but I think you can bolt your old one on in place of it.

No I don't mind you using the pic. I was just surprised to see it again.

Mine is not connected right now on my stock Quadrajet. However, I have runon probably due to that it's missing. I checked with the Chevy dealership today and they want $90 for that part (Idle Stop Solenoid). However, you can get it at any other parts store for about $25 - $30.

Edelbrock also sells an aftermarket version of the idle stop solenoid. But it's pricey too!

By the way, whats the model number on these carbs? Just curious.

scott the model number is 17085226. Hey do you guys know if our truck has ESC control. I thought I heard that this carb worked with the distributor to maintain fuel air mixture. If so, I'm wondering if the computer that controls the system is screwing up my idle.

Oh and one more question, should this truck have an O2 sensor? I know I don't have one.

Our trucks have the ESC. You can find out if yours has been removed by looking t the distributor. It it has a flat plug about 1.5 inched wide hanging off the side, you still have the ESC in place. As far as I know, the carb is not computer controlled. Again, AFAIK, the ESC just retards the timing if the knock sensor (on the passenger side of the block, just above the oil pan) detects pinging.

Swervin has instructions for bypassing it on his site, www.73-87.com

BTW, I don't have an O2 sensor. I don't think it is supposed to have one, either.
