help with 69 engine build

Hi, somewhat stumped with my 69 k10 engine build. Engine is a 350 .060" over. 11:1 hyper pistons, trick flow 195 heads, heddman longtubes, edelbrock 1406 (600cfm) carb, and edelbrock performer intake. Cam is a mild summit cam. drive train is an sm465 trans with a centerfold clutch, and 4.11 rear gears. Truck runs smooth. Starts right up and has no hiccups running it through the rpm range. My problem is it feels like there should be alot more power. It pulls consistently but never really pulls like I imagined. I based my build from a hotrod article (they used stock heads not aluminum) and claimed in the 400 for horsepower And similar for low end torque. Would switching from the 1406 to a 650 double pumper, or 770 avenger really wake this thing up? It honestly does not feel THAT much more powerful then the old worn out engine that I pulled for a rebuild last year. Thanks for any input.

Re: help with 69 engine build

I understand following a magazine article, but they are often misleading. Where is the power band supposed to be for the build though? Magazines love to show the highest HP number, which usually is only reached in a WOT 1/4 mile.

A hodge podge of parts doesn't make an engine perform well. A handful of specially selected parts with an intended rpm range is what makes an engine perform. Your biggest issue could be their heads vs your heads. I assume you're running premium gas as well? You should be able to use more carb, for sure, but I wouldn't think that carb is causing your described lack of power. It should be destroying tires and lunging violently with 400 ft lbs of torque, with your low gearing.

Re: help with 69 engine build

One thing to concider is you have 4:11 gears, i have 4:11 on my 4X4, what model do you have?? But i agree with what Lefty said, its all got to work together as a package, you also have not made mention of your timing static as well as total, also if the cam timing is straight up, + or - 2 deg ect.
