NOS parts prices vs SWB values

I used to be into squares 20 years ago before I got into 67-72's. I am shocked at the current value of SWB trucks compared to the 90's. it seems to me that the value has not increased much at all therefore I can't comprehend why NOS parts are so incredibly high on these trucks compare to 67-72. Any thoughts or am I losing my mind?

The best thing about the 67-72 trucks,... Is that almost everything is reproduced these days.
I have little use for NOS parts unless I run onto a bargain.

Lots of high priced junk trucks out there also.
So the really nice rust free real swb trucks, are bringing a premium.
And now the original paint super straight rust free trucks are bringing big money because of the patina craze.
But it's still a buyer beware market out there,...

The market is different for 73-87 trucks.
Not near as many available parts.
And they are the new "affordable" truck.
73-74 trucks are really hot now.
Even the 75-80 trucks are growing rapidly in value.

I hear you. I have one of those super straight rust free original patina 72 SWB trucks (my burb has plenty of rust) that is why I am so shocked on the prices I am seeing for 73-87 SWB trucks with minimal or no rust and original paint. I should be selling the 85 GMC original paint truck I just bought to help me fund finishing the 72 but it is not bringing the money I think it is worth so I will hold onto for now and make it a driver. It is probably a stupid move and I should dump it and finish the 72 but I can't see myself giving away the 85 IMO. End of rant.

Why Keith, I have a '74 so I am just wondering why are the 73-74 really hot, as I don't see much difference between them and the ones up to 1979 for example, before the face lift and square headlights of the 80's

since I am in California I would think the 1973-75 would be more desirable of the Square Bodies as they are SMOG exempt. I went and looked at a '76 before I bought mine over a year ago and that poor kid the owner was begging me to make him an offer, I could have bought it for $500 bucks it needed work, but it ran and drove, but he had no bites, no offers, cause we knew we would have to make it pass SMOG.

I think it's because of the guys over at http://www.squarebodysyndicate.com that have boosted the popularity of the 73-87 trucks,... Especially the 73-80 early trucks.
High optioned short fleetside trucks are bringing bigger money than ever before.

Here in the Midwest all of these trucks were rust buckets in 10 years or less.
So the southern and west coast survivors are the ones that bring the money.
Especially the loaded up Cheyenne supers and silverados.
I think the 73-74 trucks just represent the first of that era truck, and some think that model grille is the best.
Here's the Squarebody Syndicates truck from SEMA this year.
In my opinion it's the best squarebody in the country right now.

To most people the 67-72 are a classic old truck while the newer years are just a old truck or work truck to them.The reason nos parts are so high is a lot of people in the middle east love these trucks,And they got the wallet to pay anything for a nos part they want.To me i wouldn't buy nos unless i had a super rare car or truck that had to have them to make it right.I rather have a driver that i can show not a 100% show car that never runs but thats just me.As far as the years and value i love all older trucks to a point and you can still find stuff cheap enough if you look hard or take a little drive.

These trucks and parts are rising in value because it's the truck that a bunch of us grew up in. Thats the way it usually goes. You get to a point in life you can afford to build something and you build what you remember from your youth. The NOS prices reflect the rarity of a particular part.

As to the people buying these parts. They are just people that take a great level of pride in their trucks and want to make them the best truck that they can and that usually means NOS GM. At least thats my thoughts on it. I love the fact that these trucks are respected worldwide. I appreciate an owner that takes that level of pride in the truck he or she owns. I like these trucks no matter how they are built and I hope they keep getting saved and rebuilt. I have seen trucks that are just amazing and I have seen old squares that seem like they are struggling to stay together or even move under their own power. Both make me happy.

I cut the entire dash out of my 73 because of stupid prices of dash pads.
Put a 64 Dash in it, won't Crack and cooler gauges..
Same money.

As Frank noted...the guys that were in their 20's and 30's when square bodies were new can now afford to buy the best examples...and there are a limited number of good originals.
They are still nice driving trucks with good options from the factory (air/pw/pdl/tilt/cruise etc) ...so very useable even today.

And if you think NOS parts and original trucks are expensive now....just look at the C2 Corvette market...there will NEVER be any more NOS parts made...only reproduction.

Sport they did make a ton of these trucks if you counted gmc and chevy as one truck not two they out sell ford every year which is the top truck maker.So i believe the nos market is pretty big for normal parts but the rare one year or so parts might be a nightmare to find.Some people have found nos parts still at some dealerships so they are out there if you look hard enough.

There are still plenty of good deals to be had on clean original paint trucks right now, but that is rapidly changing. As the supply diminishes, and people compare costs of restoring and painting one those unmolested gems will climb in value.

Keith is correct about the Squarebody Syndicate build fueling the fire. Joes has been building nice trucks for a while now, but this build changed the game all together. There have been some amazing custom builds recently, but none like what Joe has put together.

Regarding high NOS parts, its being driven by the Middle Eastern buyers that are obsessed with the 73-87 trucks, especially GMCs. Combine that with no one reproducing these parts yet, and you have a sellers market.

It is pretty stupid how things have gotten. I bought 2 dash pads 3 years ago one for me one for a friend who was 63 at the time and wouldn't use his card on the internet for $425 a piece SHIPPED.

now they go for $2600 on ebay???


As far as the trucks I was offered a real true offer of 10k for mine a couple years ago from a sale mans when I took it into get the transmission fluid changed and new filter (just didn't want to fool with it) and I think that was a fair offer but I won't ever sell mine.

meanwhile ones in the shape of mine are on ebay for 24k right now with a 305 and 3.08 gears in it….stupid….but hey if someone will pay it guess the seller is the smart one.
