Problems with 454 swap

I bit the bullet and yanked the 350 out yesterday and put in the 454 but now have some issues I havnt really read about. It seems the engine sits really far back probly cuz of 4x4 but with the 454 the head hits the throttle lever so I guess I'll have to convert to a cable. I'm going to have to modify the crossmember it's hitting on the oil pan right now. And lastly the a scoggin-dickey clutch pivot bracket I bought puts the pivot ball no where close to where I need for the clutch my biggest issue right now. So any advice would be appreciated. The 454 is from a 93 rv I think if that helps any

Re: Problems with 454 swap

The big blocks had different engine stands and different placement in the engine bay compared to small blocks. So if you're using the SBC stands and placement, it will put it too far back in the engine bay.

I've never dinked around with a BBC in one of these trucks so I'm not 100% sure of what bolts where, but hang tight. Someone will be along to give more info.

And as far as I know the General never put a BBC in a 67-72 4x4 from the factory, right?

Re: Problems with 454 swap

Our trucks never came with a big block and your pretty stuck with the placement unless you switch to a automatic because of your shifters I know the "big block" stands raise the engine but that would actually make my problems worse since it would tilt the engine towards the firewall

Re: Problems with 454 swap

The 4X4 section of this forum has quite a bit of info on this subject, but be careful, as the 4X4 section covers all years of Chevy trucks. Sometimes people are posting about 73 and up trucks but fail to give that info.
I'll tell you what I can remember, I put a BB in a 69 K10, but that was in 1987. For starters, I have no experience with a 93 BB, only 74 and older. The different motor mounts that people talk about are for 2WD trucks so the BB exhaust manifolds will clear. The stock 67-72 4X4 crossmember and motor mounts from a SB will work with a BB. My engine was out of a car and I didn't have any oil pan clearance issues. I'm guessing that the rv pan is bigger. Both SB and BB have 2 holes for the clutch ball, these trucks normally use the front hole which is no problem for a SB with ram horn manifolds. The problem that I had was that all my manifolds covered the front hole. As luck would have it, I had a 68 GMC K2500 parts truck, that originally had a V6 in it. This truck was set up for the clutch linkage to use the rear hole. I used the clutch linkage from that truck and had to put a new hole in the firewall and plug the original firewall hole. I've seen other 67-72 4X4 trucks with a BB and a standard tranny, and I doubt they used V6 linkage, so I'm sure there are other ways of going about it. I had several exhaust manifolds, some cleared the frame and crossmember, some didn't. I think the ones that did were from a car, but I'm not sure. As far as the throttle linkage, I was converting over to a cable anyways, so I never had to deal with that. Hope this helps, any other questions, ask and I'll see if I can help out.

Re: Problems with 454 swap

The only difference in the gen v blocks is that there is no fuel pump or clutch ball provisions hence u I bought an adapter that ended up being way to short I'm hoping they sent one for a corvette by accident. I thought about changing oil pans from a car but I wanted to stay with the 7 qt pan I only need another 1/4" on the crossmember. Now I'm trying to think of a way to do a hydraulic clutch set up without changing the bell housing

Re: Problems with 454 swap

Is the "boss" in the casting for the clutch ball? I put a 400 SB in a truck with a stick and the block was cast for the clutch ball, but was never drilled and tapped. I drilled and tapped it, although the hydraulic clutch would probably solve exhaust manifold clearance problems as well.

Re: Problems with 454 swap

It didn't look like mine was advance adapters make a bracket for a slave cylinder that bolts to the bell housing of a nv4500 now to just find out if it's the same for a sm465
