As I understand things, not all step side trucks had them. My 1965 didn't and I'm 100% sure my truck is original. I plan to add additional bracing to the step one day because people today are bigger (taller and heavier) than they were in the 1960s and I don't want the step to bend if someone HUGE decides they want to use it.

my 65 came with them. if you wanna be crafty, you can take a rod thats threaded on one end and bend it to fit into the slot and flatten the other end and drill the mounting hole. or you can search the net.
