Re: And another Rear lsd or locker thread.

You can do burnouts with an open differential just fine (with one tire). I would steer clear of any sort of positive locker or spool, as the annoyance from the chattering/clunking, during engagement and disengagement will more than outweight the enjoyment of laying down two stripes instead of one. Not to mention the crazy tire wear you will get. I think a positraction differential is what you want. However, these do not just drop in like some of the "lunch box" lockers out there. Your best bet is to have someone install it for you, or try to find a rear end with a posi already in it and swap it in.

Re: And another Rear lsd or locker thread.

Lots of good points there guys!... bbbbbbuuuutt IMO one wheel burnouts are not cool! as it would be smoking two tires. idk looking at the information from other popular builds ..maby the Eaton Posi or truetrac.. cleszkie make the good point on the chatter engagement witch would consider me a bit.. idk.. hopefully there a in between livin' the dream.

Re: And another Rear lsd or locker thread.

I wouldn't consider gear swap easy or cheap. The cheapest and easiest way to do this is to find a used posi rear someone is selling. To swap gears involves tools and techniques you probably haven't used before (this is an assumption based on the question), and it's pretty easy to get a chewed up gearset and/or carrier if you do it wrong.

the more expensive, and slightly more difficult way to do this, is to pull the rear end, completely disassemble it (to save on cost) and take in down to a rear end shop to have them rebuild it.

PowerTrax. I have one in my 72 GMC and my 69 Camaro. I've got around 7000 miles with one on the truck, it's quite and gets the job done.

Re: And another Rear lsd or locker thread.

i like everyone input..i do tend to read a lot of reviews befor a buy... but still on this two because of popular vote. Eaton Posi or truetrac..mmm..?.. as for me doing the work very comfortable me doing the work..I understand y people choose not to do certain jobs mosty money time are the same and having to do it twice or paying the same for having it done ur self is no fun. the only reward is experience.. but I can handle this.. there is plenty info on the web and here..

The Lock Right locker's are a very good option for what your looking for. Easy install and very durable and streetable as well. Prices are very reasonable.

Re: And another Rear lsd or locker thread.

Just for clarity, the PowerTrax acts like a locker when you drive in a straight line. When you are making a turn, it releases unlike a locker.

What I meant is the truck now has 7000 miles on it with no issues from the PowerTrax. Everything is working great.

I had one of these in my old rear end. It was smooth as glass with thick 80w140 oil and an auto trans. As long as you didn't throttle it in the corners you couldn't tell it was there.

THEN, I replaced the auto with a SM465. It squeaked the tires around every corner. My guess is that the Sm465 has such a heavy gearset that it kept a steady load on the driveshaft (even with the clutch pushed in) and caused the locker to get confused and lock up.
