Planning on recovering my door panels..HELP! - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

Anyone done this before? I've seen some of you have...anyone got any tips? I wanna just pull the panels off and apply a material over the WHOLE thing. (Preferrably a shade of blue)
What adhesive should I use? Any padding I should use?

Do you have a fabric store nearby? They have a 3M company spray (adhesive) for what your describing. If you go you can perhaps get the material you need at the same time. There are several shops in the phoenix area that have fabric for cars, trucks along with the needed tools and ties. So you may want to check the phone book for a fabric store. Don't worry its just not a bunch of old ladies, their are are quite a few trimmers that go into these places for supplies. I bought the grey tweed for my son truck at one of these places.

I bought some tan vinyl material from a fabric store to restore a card table. 1 sq. yard was only $5. There were some other vinyl material in black, but was more like $12/yard. Material already has padding so I don't think you need to buy any. Last time I was in a fabric store, was when my mom dragged me along in hand when she was looking a women's dress patterns.

Upholstery shops are not supposed to sell the glue they use. It's against the law. They wear a mask to apply it. Something about it causing cancer. I tried to buy some from them and they quickly told me, no way. Of course this also may have been their way of talking me into letting them do it.

But, I do know I seen him putting it on and he ran me out. He had a high dollar mask on too. Talk about strong smelling. It about knocked me down when I opened the door.

I know that there is some pretty powerful stuff out there, but I'm kinda use to it since my oldest son paints and touches up cars for a living. But again the 3M addhesive is the same stuff that they use in car/truck magazines in a rattle can when their demonstrating interior modifications. It worked well for his door panel inserts when he placed vinly over the cardboard panel.

Also when you look for a fabric store look for one that advertises "upholstery" instead of just fabric. There are two places in phoenix area, Tempe Auto Sales and H & R sales. I've been to both, they have many different tweeds,vinlys, foams along with the plastic clips that hold some door panels on. They also have the specialty screws that do not cut into the material, and if you want a diamond pattern with buttons they have the button that they stretch your material over so everything matches.

i just had these done for 125.00.

2 panels., the dash panel and the door bottoms. I did not want to mess with it, but I am sure that if you do it yourself like these guys told you you can save lots of money.

do not use the reatlle can stuff as soon as the heat hits it it will com un glued. get som good contack cement. here are the ones i did

How did you shave off the old handle and keep the panel looking clean?
