Is this color close.

I am actually getting close to finishing. Been a fun, interesting but tedious process as you all know. I will post pictures pictures later as I have more time. Its getting through the thousands of pictures which were taken every day.
One of the finishing touches is painting the emblem on the truck and I found the post informing us the color code of the paint but the paint dealer I use was not able to find it.
I tried to match the color (faded I'm sure) on the emblem as close as I could and I then used a red color to also try. Do you guys think the orange color is close to factory if so thats what I will use. If it is not then maybe I will use the red which kind of looks ok too.

Re: Is this color close.

What is the color code of the paint, according to the post you're referring to?

I'm doing the same thing. Is like to know what is the supposedly correct color even if it's not available.

Re: Is this color close.

The post I read says it is called Rocket Red gm color WA295X. My dealer could not find the color in his system. The color that was left on my emblems was fairly orange close to the one I sprayed with Krylon "Pumpkin Orange".
I sprayed the second emblem with a Krylon "Banner Red" and it definitely does not look factory but I wanted to see how it looked. More the color of the front GMC emblem.

Re: Is this color close.

Let me know if you have any luck finding that color sample. I would like to finish the emblems then can put my fenders on.

For your information I painted my emblems using aluminum foil tape and then a utility knife to cut the pattern out. Not sure how others have done it other than brush.

Re: Is this color close.

Looks like a good approach

What I did was to find an emblem that wasn't too faded (looks like it was garage kept) and had my local PPG paint guy match the colors with a book of paint chips. And my gf is a very talented artist who is going to paint the emblems with some of her fancy brushes. I asked her if it would be too much trouble and she just laughed and said it was no big deal. She hasn't done it yet but she might do it tomorrow.

If you want I can give you the paint codes for the chips he wound up choosing as a good match. He held the chips up to the emblem in both bright sunlight and some kind of fancy light he had and I couldn't tell the difference. Plus there is such a small amount of paint to begin with I doubt anyone could tell if it was a shade or two off.

Re: Is this color close.

Three four-oz cans of PPG paint was around $27.

Re: Is this color close.

That would be great I'll take it to my paint rep. I used ppg for the rest of the truck.

Take a picture when your gf is done if you don't mind. I bet they will look great.

Re: Is this color close.

Sure will. They were the Camper Special emblems with the 10,000 GVW info on them. The three colors are the dusky yellow, the Orange and the black used in the emblem.

The orange was also pretty much identical to the Sierra Classic 3500 emblems in my front fenders on my '86 so I'm assuming it's either identical or a very close match to the Sierra front fender emblems of other years.

If your planning on restoring emblems, take a look at this. Its a brilliant approach with fantastic results. Painting emblems using lacquer paint and a hypodermic syringe

Re: Is this color close.

Again, these are a "best-match" based on emblems that APPEARED to be in good condition.

This is not a match based on true GM codes - it is not a cross reference to the real actual nonfaded paint colors.

Black

Yellow

Orange
