Quick save on bolt with end threads damaged
I came across this tool and thought I would share.
The Uniburr will quickly chamfer the end of a bolt with damaged threads. There has been times I wished I had something like this...especially wheel studs...so I ordered one. Looks a lot faster than slowly filing. http://youtu.be/QaJlYwoUJlY |

Re: Quick save on bolt with end threads damaged
I ordered it from Amazon.com and it is on back order. Might be more available through the company website. All prices were pretty much the same for the two uniburrs available.

Re: Quick save on bolt with end threads damaged
I saw it on Facebook, watched the video then did some research on Google.
Just got lucky I guess. Though a bit pricey, it will save a bunch of time when needed. |

Re: Quick save on bolt with end threads damaged
Let us know how it works when you get it. I'm interested on how far back you can cut a bolt. Good find. It's on my list awaiting further review.

Re: Quick save on bolt with end threads damaged
I will. Hopefully it won't be on back order long though I did see a press release from the company about some production difficulty.

Re: Quick save on bolt with end threads damaged
I saw this on FB as well. Amazon was back ordered but the company site has them in stock. I ordered the Uniburr+ model and it came in yesterday. Very cool. Haven't tried it yet but will soon. Biggest thing is you MUST only use this with a 100-600 RPM drill. If you don't have one that will allow you to run it slow, don't use it.
Many years that I could have used something like this. Wish I would have thought of it!

Re: Quick save on bolt with end threads damaged
The specifically say not to try to make metal pencils out of things. Just the minimum amount needed.

That is a good one when the situation arises. Which is always.

And the day before you get one. Of course once you have this tool, you will never need it again. Darn that Murphy and his laws!

Re: Quick save on bolt with end threads damaged
The Uniburr finally came in this past week.
This version is for hardened steel. To test it, I damaged the threads on the end of a bolt and verified the nut wouldn't engage the threads. The tool instructions advise a maximum of 600 rpm's. Ay first I wasn't able to make any shavings and I found by varying the engagement angle, pressure and speed it started to work. Once I figured that out I was making shavings like in the picture above, the end chamfered nicely and the nut would turn onto the threads. And you guys are probably right...now I have this I will never need it again. That would be OK! Apologies I couldn't get a clear picture. |
