Undercoating removal -

What is the best way to remove 50 year old undercoating?

I don't have the shop or compressor to be able to sand blast. I'll be working with an angle grinder. The wire wheel does not seem to make a dent.

Should I get a 7" angle grinder?

Then again, I will be welding in some new panels, painting with POR15 and undercoating everything, do I really need to take off the old stuff if it is on so well?

All opinions or experience appreciated. Thanks.

Propane torch, putty knife. This will get most of it, and be the fastest way to take off big sections.

I agree with heat and scrape. Abrasives will just clog up. If it is not dried up and peeling just remove what is needed for repair work. It is tough to duplicate factory undercoat in places that show but multiple light coats will build a thicker coating than heavy coats do.

I do media blasting, and have no trouble removing undercoating. I suggest you find one in your area. Media blaster not sand blaster.

Use a good heat gun and a scraper. Not glamorous, dirty as heck, but effective.
