51 GMC COE Bookmobile
How about a blast from the past fellas? Not my truck nor do I know who is selling it, but I thought it my duty to show you guys what popped up on that list of Craig's this morning.
A 51 GMC C.O.E. Bookmobile. Only one I can ever remember seeing so yeah, I think it's probably rare as hens teeth. Now rare, and desirable may be two different things. The market will tell. Anyhow, here it is. Even shows the old Arizona State University logo. Cool as heck to me. Even though it's not my cup of tea. https://phoenix.craigslist.org/nph/cto/5340199928.html

Re: 51 GMC COE Bookmobile
Someone on this forum was restoring one of those a few years back. Actually they were "restofying" it with later model running gear. From what I remember from that thread, those are not a restoration for the faint of heart, or thin bank account.

Re: 51 GMC COE Bookmobile
OK, so I called. Yes, I would very much like to take it on as my next project......but $10,000 is outta my range for a usable shell. That's all I would use. Man how cool would this thing be tricked out.

Re: 51 GMC COE Bookmobile
I agree, it would make a killer camper/toy hauler, but OMG, $10,000? He must be figuring someone from next months Barrett Jackson auction will bite. Still, looks to be really rust free and complete. Nope, not even gonna think about it. Homer's still not finished.

Re: 51 GMC COE Bookmobile
Yeah, a bit pricy but it depends on the condition. This is in Arizona guys, the desert, there is a good possibility this truck is literally rust free (serious rust that is, obviously it has some you can see it in the photo) with perfectly solid floors and cab corners and such. If that is the case, it would be a zillion times easier to rebuild than if it was a rust bucket and that $10K wouldn't sound like that much.

This is the one over here in WA. It needs everything, basically just a shell and a damaged one at that lol Been for sale for awhile, but still better than $10g. I was tempted to grab it but I already have a bread van to build that is the same size as this and requires less work. But if he gets $10g for his, maybe I should sell mine for that lol

Re: 51 GMC COE Bookmobile
Time is money. Lots here have the time not the money. That one in Seattle has been for sale for years now & still hasn't sold for any amount, not just because of the work required either. I bought my running, fairly rust free '63 bread van, same size as the bookmobile for $500. It's a one of kind made for a local FD same '50s styling despite being a '63. Lots of these old big bread vans/bookmobiles around & they aren't that desirable. Rare doesn't equal desirable or expensive in this case. They are cheap big vans, not $10g projects simply as that. Not every classic is a gold nugget lol

Re: 51 GMC COE Bookmobile
Regular, not bookmobile COE trucks are bringing from $3000-$5000 depending on condition , location and a few other factors . This one has a extra $5000 tacked on due to the unique part of rear van body. It is worth exactly what some one will pay . High or low. About 10 years a local yard had the exact same bookmobile. It did not have much rust and I was almost ready to buy when I examined the frame work of the back section . It was totally made of wood and after 50 plus years the tin work was loosly attached. I had visions of sheet metal flying off at 60 mile an hour on the way home. All of the tin work would have had to be removed and of course I would have went with a metal frame. When I took that into consideration I decided it would be easier just to buy a regular COE and convert it to whatever I wanted. I ended up parting it out and the whole yard ended up being crushed. There were 5000 cars in that yard. Kind of sad but sign of the times.
