Found a Spicer Brown Lipe auxiliary 3 speed transmission in the junkyard today.

First off I am not 4x4 literate so bare with me please.

I happened upon a 1975 3/4 ton 2 wheel drive Burb in the boneyard today.

I peeked in the window and saw a strange non factory stick shift rising out form the floor which was obviously weird to me. I looked at the driver's foot well and discovered it had a factory clutch pedal....ok, cool.

Mind you, the engine and trans where already gone but when I dove under the passenger side I saw some weird fuel pump looking thing mounted to the frame rail. I grabbed the small fuel hose which was still attached to one side and out poured a small amount of diesel fuel.

Putting things together, this previous owner had a diesel engine, 4 speed manual, 3 speed Brownie and an 8 lug full floating GM rear end in this rig.

Anyway, does anyone know how you operated the Brownie box, I found the gear ratios for the Brownie Lipe model 5831 b and if correct they are as follows:

over .85 direct 1.00 under 2.35

So does that mean for each revolution the drive shaft makes the output shaft on the Brown rotates only .85 of a revolution when in the overdrive position....for example?

Do you shift this thing on the fly or choose a gear before you begin driving?

I drove one a few times in an 8 ton crane truck when i was younger, i found it easier to just leave the brownie in D and drive the 4 speed like normal, didn't get enough drive time to get really good at it but thought it was pretty cool, unfortunately i cannot be certain of the shift pattern for that truck and don't know what model transmission it had. I am pretty sure tho that it was not Lo-1234, D-1234, O-1234.


Best advice i can give it figure out all the gear ratios of the transmission and brownie on paper, then combine each 12 combinations and find each overall ratio then write the position of the shifter's down in order at least until memorized.
