Someone had asked me about this type of thing and possibly writing a book about it (no way). So I thought I'd share a bit. Over the last 30 years I've probally done it 25 times...it's ALWAYS an adventure.

I did that in '90 with my '65 C10 (Texas to Ontario) and in '09 with my son and his '87 IROC (Texas to Ontario).
Both trips were fun and had stories that came with them.

I still remember the trip Longhornman and Mike did years ago getting a station wagon in the PNW. The most excitement of Nebraska was a box of Triscuts. LOL

Longhornman also came out to my house. We had a board "build" meeting getting the burb ready that he purchased from me. He also had a thread on that trip ... it was pretty good.

Ive flown to the east coast, looked at and purchased a car ... but had to have it shipped back here. Middle of winter in a not sure about reliability of the car wasn't my idea of a fun road trip lol

best make sure you have friends along the route... I have a buddy in Maryland, Dennis, who had called me to pick up a car he bought in Long Island. He decided to do it himself when I told him the cost of the truck going into NY ( those thieves charge $21 per axel in a truck so the toll for my truck and trailer is $84) and what it would take to bring him his car he decided to go get it himself. well he gets into central NJ and it threw a engine bearing. Guess who came to get him. Its sitting in my yard now until we figure out what to do with it. a picture for your viewing pleasure.

Just getting started ( Salem OR.), hangin' at a good friends house going over the ol' feller before we head down 101 to Gold Beach, OR. Quite happy with it...so far
It's amazingly rust free ( a Klamath falls truck), cruises at 60 with the 350 that's in it.
I hope taking my wife along doesn't back fire on me

I just got back last week from CA. Grandpa finally decided it was time to pass his truck on. So I flew out there got the truck ready (took 2 days off). We left orange county the 7th, took a few days to get back here to AR. Had a blast, made me realize though that some of your hero's aren't immortal..... sure will cherish the time we had on the trip. A couple of crazy guys running wild across the states lol. Rolled his silverado over 86k and then he signed it over to me. Kinda fun owning something you grew up in!

That's how I bought the Niner 5 years ago, except it was during Christmas and New Years so I didn't drive it back.
I left Hartford at 6am to Cleveland to Denver to Sacramento, took a rental car to Old Sacramento, did a 50 mile test drive with the truck, gave the owner cash, then at 6pm went from Sacramento to Atlanta and back to Hartford by 1am.

Guys, when you fly out somewhere to buy a vehicle, how do you keep your cash safe?

Been awhile but I think I arranged it with my bank ahead of time to do a transfer if the car was what I was expecting.

You have to be really careful with large amounts of cash now due to government seizure ... Why do you have this much cash? Probably drug money, we will just hold on to it ... Lots of stuff about this online.

Or better hope the vehicle you bought doesn't spin a bearing within 100 miles. That would suck even if you walked down the road a piece to buy it.

Well, when I bought my '72 I sent a deposit and I think we agreed I'd bring a cashiers check which at the time would have been from Bank of America. But, I realized on the plane I forgot the funds. The guy let me drive the truck cross country, send the money when I get home, then he'd send the title. First he took a chance, then me, and it all worked out.

Gold Beach at buddies house



Well, didn't get real far (hwy 101, eureka ca) before I had a problem. Started to get a loud squall when lifting the gas, was out in the middle of nowhere, raining like a cow pissin' on a flat rock. I'm thinkin' damn, this is not good ( the whole time saying nothing to my wife). Short story, 2 bad ujoints and a loose bolt holding the pinion yoke? on. Could have been bad chit if it let go whilst driving. Found a very nice fella in the parking lot on a side street working on a car, got him to replace joints. All fixed and ready to continue yeeeha!

Eureka! I lived in that area for a while many moons back. I'm really glad you had this issue to embellish your story. It would be so boring without any issues (I'm not wishing any bad ju-ju on you, though). Ah yes, the challenge met with triumph. What an epic tale! Shew! I'm glad you caught that loose pinion. That reminds me of one of my trip stories (they're all "road" trips aren't they?), but won't muddle up your thread. Been meaning to start a thread on "Getting it home" stories from near and far with new purchases or in ole reliable. I think the time has come

I've got a reverse Road Trip story. Many years ago my Xwife and I took my 40 Ford pickup to Oklahoma to The Street Rod Nationals. It didn't have AC and was 90+ degrees all the way. We drove into town and I stopped at a service station to fill up and a guy say's " Is it really For Sale? ". I had left the sign in the back window just in case.

I remarked $12,500 throwing a number out, he wanted to drive it and I let him with me as a passenger. When we returned to the station he said can you give me 30 minutes to get the money?. He returned with CASH and even paid for the Fill Up. I had to ask him for a ride to Greyhound Station, that turned out to be the quietest ride home you could imagine in fact she didn't talk to me for about a week.
