Project: Greenbach Twin Turbo 68 C20 Build

This is going to be my first truck build and I am super excited. My father in law and I bought this truck about 7 or 8 years ago. We were looking for a shop truck to build but found this gem on ebay and fell in love. It was already bagged when we got it but the work was "subpar" to put it nicely. This truck came out of Michigan and was neglected. It has rust all over, it is much worse than I thought now that I have tore into it...... I am so in love with this truck so I have a lot of patching to do.

2 years ago it lost a transmission and with work being crazy busy and life not cooperating I had to park it. I finally got to a point where I could give it the love it desperately needs.

So as of right now the build is going to be a twin turbo LS with a T56 tranny. I plan on keeping the exterior as is because I really like the patina on the original color. The interior is going to be all updated. I plan on running a digital dash from Haltech which will give me all the information I need so I wont be needing to run any gauges.

Here is a picture of the "greenbach" from a few years ago with a Triumph I built in the bed.

Also have a T56 transmission from a late 90s WS6 trans-am.

Here is how the previous owners cut the dash to make room for some gauges.

And the last picture is how she sits tonight. I removed the whole front end and I am taking the core support in for sandblasting tomorrow.

Re: Project: Greenbach Twin Turbo 68 C20 Build

Some update pictures.

I ran out of space in the garage at my house so I finally had to pull the trigger and take it down to my shop...

Got the bed off and all the old plumbing out from the air bag system... Going to build a new back half and run all the air lines in hard line.

I got the T56 mated up to the new LS. Once the old motor is removed this will be ready to go in.

Re: Project: Greenbach Twin Turbo 68 C20 Build

Very nice. I like the LS and T56 setup.

I keep running into that same problem of "running out of room", but I don't have a shop to bring my project to.

Re: Project: Greenbach Twin Turbo 68 C20 Build

Oh boy. This is turning into a fun project. At least now I think she is done with her surprises. I finally got the cab off so I can see what I am working with. The "C" notch in the rear frame section is horrid.

I am building a new back half so I have a new canvas to start with.

Something is up with the shock location. The rear links I made are the exact same length and the exact same hole centers. Yet the truck has almost an 1" difference left to right. I am not going to spend much time trying to figure it out since it is all going away anyways.

Re: Project: Greenbach Twin Turbo 68 C20 Build

In for the twins.

Are you gonna do anything to the LS, or leave it stock? I've got a whole collection of broken pistons and bent rods from my years of beating on stock LS turbo stuff. lol.

As of right now I am just running all stock. The plan is to get it running and get all the bugs worked out then build another motor and swap it.

I didn't want to spend any cash on the motor internals right now because I new this truck was going to need a lot of work. Plus I want to drive it...

Re: Project: Greenbach Twin Turbo 68 C20 Build

Made some progress today.

Removed the old motor and got the new motor installed. Have to make a rear tranny mount and then get the bed back on for modification. I removed the harness so I can start on that nightmare next week.

Going to finish up the rear frame rails tomorrow. Hopefully I can keep it rolling now. August is coming pretty quick.

Waiting on the bag brackets to get here so I can start the rear suspension.

Re: Project: Greenbach Twin Turbo 68 C20 Build

Depending on the exhaust, you may need to modify the crossmember. I had to make one too for clearance of the 4" downpipe on my build.

Looks great though!

I was thinking the same thing. But I am hoping to run the exhaust outboard of the frame rails and exit through the bed just behind the doors.

Re: Project: Greenbach Twin Turbo 68 C20 Build

I ran my 4" dp outboard of the frame rail and dumped it just before the rear tire. The blazer rocker boxes make it tricky..not much room down there.

Re: Project: Greenbach Twin Turbo 68 C20 Build

Going to have a busy weekend. Got all the rear bag pieces minus a few tabs which I will pick up tomorrow.

Plan is to have the new rear frame section in this weekend. I have a new 4wd rear axle coming tomorrow. So I can start the 6 lug conversion.

Also picked up some 22" transit wheels which look really good with the hub caps that came off the truck...

Once I get tires on the new wheels I can make the trailing arms and get the rear bag system all ready to go.. Then on to the motor..

Re: Project: Greenbach Twin Turbo 68 C20 Build

Got the rear frame section cut off today. Got the new frame rails level squared and tacked.

Going to finish welding it out this week and start on the 4 link.

I hope to have it on its wheels by the weekend.

Re: Project: Greenbach Twin Turbo 68 C20 Build

Got the rear frame section welded in. Put the cab on so I could cut the trans tunnel. Going to send the frame out to sandblasting and wanted to fit the cab before the frame left so I can work on the cab while the frame is gone.

I am on the fence about a dropmember or not...... Now is the time to make the decision.
