Question speedometer bounces........

ive got a 69 6cyl,4-speed,,,,,,after about 25 mph,the needle on the speedometer bounces about 5mph,,,,,anyone know? ,bad speedometer? stretched cable?,,,,,,jeff

Usually means the cable is either bad or needs lube.

Detach it at both ends and spray some brake or carb cleaner thru it then some (spelling check) grafite dry lube.

It could be the gear in the tranny also. My 72 did that it would bounce wildly till the the plastic gear finally grenaded and quit totally. Replaced the gear everything was great.

My cable was a little loose at the back of the speedo... Mine quit bouncing after I tightened it. I did lube it soon after though when I replaced the bezel and installed a tach in the tach hole.

You have to remove the drive shaft, then remove the tail shaft. Then the gear is held on by a little clip I think. I have never removed one. Mine was in little pieces in the tail shaft. I remember putting in on was easy enough.

I recently changed one in a TH 350. There is a metal clip as mentioned but they seem to be pressed on a bit too. I pryed on it to remove and when it let go, it flew to the back of the garage! They are plastic but tough. (just becareful of the edges if you want to save it) GM dealers have new ones for under $4.00 but you can get them used at auto transmission shops for like a buck.

Oh yeh, when putting in a new one, use a pipe or similar and tap it on straight or it can snap in two.

For the speedometer cable, just disconnect it from the back of the speedometer and pull the cable out of the cable housing. Then lube it and reinstall. (I like to submerge the cable into a quart of trans fluid, then dab off the excess)

Mine is in a 4x4 so the gear is in the transfer case. Now how is this gear removed?
