carburetor problems.

Good afternoon everyone. I just bought a 64 c10 and when I got it found out it was a 350 and has a 4 barrel Quadrajet M4 I think the numbers for it are 7045214YP 0336. I am thinking the guy who owned it before made it a two barrel for some reason. The vacuum breaker is not hooked up and he made it so the two front ports are always open. Any input with this I haven't ever worked with a 4 barrel. Is it worth rebuilding and spending the money there or should i buy a new Carburetor? Thanks in advance.

Re: carburetor problems.

When I got my 65, it had a remanned Qjet from 97 on it. Ran like crap, had to jack up the idle just to keep it running. I left it on there for a week to get it through inspection, then first thing I did was buy a NEW holley. Slapped it on a new manifold; and its one less thing to worry about.

I didn't have the time or patience to rebuild the Qjet; which looked close to the condition yours is in.

A nice 600 CFM edelbrock with a manual choke goes for $289 at Auto Zone.

I have never owned a qjet worth a crap. I second the holley. You can get a spread bore holley that will bolt rite on the qjet intake.

Re: carburetor problems.

You can't "make" a 4 bbl a 2 bbl.

Those top butterflys over the back barrels on a Q-jet will not open unless the engine is under a load. So you can wap the throttle in Park in the driveway all day long and they won't open.

The "front ports" is just the choke flap open over the front 2 barrels.

So not sure what the question is... but I bet it's running exactly as it's supposed to.

Re: carburetor problems.

The PO probably just robbed the vacuum break to put on another carb. I would buy a new vacuum break ($10?) and read a few articles on Qjets and play with it a little and see how it runs.

Re: carburetor problems.

From the pictures that carb isn't working like it supposed to. For one the choke flap doesn't even have the rod hooked up. The vacuum break also has to be hooked up. Since your expertise is limited I'd either have this one rebuilt or buy a new qjet.
