Re: Looking for my grandpas 72 Cheyenne...

The truck was last registered in Kansas. I have spoken to the elderly lady that bought it from my grandpa. She thinks they sold it but can't remember when.

She said they sold one in the 90s and it was wrecked shortly there after.

She's the last registered owner in the state.

Re: Looking for my grandpas 72 Cheyenne...

Finding your grandpa's truck would probably be more like finding a needle in a hay FIELD.

I guess if you could give some of us more information, that might help. I was able to track down a 1996 Camaro Z28 ILE using the VIN and last known transfer of title. I found it in a private GM collection in Canada. Here is just what I think we need:

1. Last known owner (which you have)
2. City and State of last know owner
3. Name of your Grandfather
4. A good description of the truck including paint colors and options. An old photo would really help.
5. The date of last title transfer
6. Any distinguishing features such as wooden side rails, cab lights, dent in left door, etc.
7. Dealer that sold your Grandpa the truck (it might have a dealer nameplate on it).

Good luck on finding the truck.

I would check with the DMV for the county where it was wrecked. They may not help, but, other than that, no real way to dig it out.

Re: Looking for my grandpas 72 Cheyenne...

Hasn't been registered since the lady sold it is a clue if it was wrecked after she sold it. Why would someone register a wrecked truck?

Good luck!

Re: Looking for my grandpas 72 Cheyenne...

Go down to the local tag office and have them run the serial number if it doesn't show up you're probably out of luck. If it does still show the woman it was sold to then in it probably was crushed out. Now if you can find the salvage it went to they may still have the title a lot of salvages in OK keep old titles who knows they may still have part of the truck it could give you something to work with. Good luck. Danny

Re: Looking for my grandpas 72 Cheyenne...

Alright update on truck and how I found it. It was stupid easy, so I am hoping it was meant to be.

I was born in 73, gpa bought the truck in late 72 new. I grew up in that truck. When I was small we did everything in the truck. Mom drove it to school her SR year. Gma and mom took me everywhere. When I got a little older I would go out and sleep in the truck during the afternoons or even at night. I learned how to drive that truck on the back country roads of southeast Kansas... Fished, hunted, took girls on dates, etc... It was my everything growing up... When I went off to the service, GPA thought that he would trade it and since it has a 4bbl on it, that I had no need for that truck... I cried when I came home from leave to find it gone...

Now how I found it. I know a lot of people that work in the county courthouse in SEK that grandpa had everything registered in. I called up there and asked for a favor from some of the people I know. They went back in the records and found the Vin and the last registered owner on record. Now this is where I really got lucky I feel. Gpa traded in for some junk ass Toyota in or around the Joplin area around 1993 time frame. The truck apparently didnt come back into the state of KS until around the 2005 time frame. I had a feeling the truck was in MO for some time. Well the last known register user lives around the Mound City KS area. This is where it gets a little interesting.

My sister in law is the funeral director of Mound City KS. I called her and asked if she new this person. Funny thing is she does know this lady and they go to church together. So my SIL asks this person if it was okay for me to reach out to her and inquire about a 72 PU that she has. I was given the number of this lady and gave her a ring...

So I call this lady and visit with her for a bit... Shes 71 and just a little behind on the conversation. I am asking questions and trying to gather information in what truck she has.. I gave her the vin CCE142J119951 and asked her to look back through her records and see what she has. Or if she did have it at one time where it might be. She gave me the name and # of her son, I spent about 10 days trying to connect with this guy... Then just a couple of days ago, this lady calls me and says that she has a 72 PU and the title she has for it and the Vin matches perfectly.

So at that point i start to cry LOL... Cant believe I found it.... She clearly said she really doesnt want to sell it right now... My SIL and her are going to have coffee one day next week and get some more pictures of the truck for me.

If you tell that story to them, and if it is "just a truck" to them and they don't sell I question if there is a beating heart in the current owners. Lol. Best of luck in your quest to recapture some of your past.

Gonna take it slow and use some strategery with them... Its sitting in a shed right now, battery is dead and they havent driven it since summer....

So, Im going up that way soon to visit my sister in law and to go out to that farm and see the truck...

Quick funny story about the truck I shared with them - back in the early 80's we were hunting on the old home place in NW OK just south of the KS border around a town called Bartlett KS. Well we were coming home that evening and it was Gpa, me, dads GF and dad in the truck. Dads GF kept fidgitting with the trigger and safety on her rifle. Well you guessed it, she shot a hole in the floor of the truck.... LOL HOly crap our ears rang for an hour afterwards... Well I explained that to the owners and they didnt know about the hole... I know exactly where that hole is located and will be able to tell if it was filled or not.

Thats the first thing I will checking on that truck, Im crawling under it and looking for evidence....

Taking things easy is probably the best way to go about this- you don't want to rub them the wrong way. I bet you'll be able to work a deal- congrats!
