door glass metal surround delete

Hi All, Ive been building a what turned out to be a 49 5 window 3100.
I am wondering if its possible, or if anyone has deleted the metal trim the goes around the door glass?

Ive been searching for months, ive read so many post threads about glass but have not found anything that comes close to what im trying to do.

I probably need to give more info, but dont really know what to give. Can someone help guide me in the right direction to figure this out?

thanks,

Aaron

If you are referring to the metal trim that clips onto the door frame, I think I have seen where guys weld it onto the door frame so it looks like one piece. I believe Shannon (xpickup) did it for one of his customers trucks.

If you are referring to the metal trim that is actually glued to the glass, I guess you could just remove it and then make the felt channel in the door frame narrower for a tight fit...... but I don't know why you would want to do that. I love the metal trim on my windows..... just my opinion.

I have smooth side door glass with no metal trim. You just need to find a source that sells narrower felt. I bought mine from a vender at a swap meet many years back. I even had the edges of the glass polished for a nicer look.

It is not that big of a deal.

Yeah the glass will need to be urethaned to the lower channel and then use different felt channel around the edges. They make it that has a thinner center to it. A glass shop should be able to help you with it, it's just generic channel that has been used over the years in many cars and trucks.

If you do remove it, keep my name here to send me a message if you have it for sale, I may need it.

But really, I find it to be a cool thing about the truck.

Yep, did it on my '46. Just use your old glass including the metal frame as a pattern for the new glass, have new glass cut and tempered (glass shops do this all the time), install new felt and new glass and your done. The polished edge is a nice touch, mine are not.

Re: door glass metal surround delete

Are you sure they really "Tempered" them? That isn't very common really. They can have it done of course but it's pretty rare around here that it ever would be. They aren't safety plate then? Because they could be made out of safety plate too, with the edge polished done deal.

They were originally safety plate as all cars were back then other than curved back glasses which were tempered. And many late model cars have safety plate side glass because of side air bags.

What is the advantage to doing this? Seals better? Is this more for one piece or work well with vent window?

No real advantage other than it looks cleaner/more modern (to some people). It will not function any different.

Re: door glass metal surround delete

A local glass shop cuts the windows out of regular plate glass and then sends it out to be tempered. They send it to a shop in the Portland Oregon area to be done.

You can't temper laminated glass as the plastic lamination will melt. .

Prime reason is that the laminated glass cracks easily enough in the one piece windows with the frame around it if the doors are slammed by someone who isn't used to being gentle when closing the door.

Re: door glass metal surround delete

Mr48 is on the money with this one. My side glass was cut, then I checked it for size, then it was sent to be tempered. The cost was less then $40 per side window. Over 10 years now and no issues.

Re: door glass metal surround delete

I didn't know it was so common to have it tempered. But then I did have a glass shop cut a table top for me and temper it. Duh!

Re: door glass metal surround delete

Thank you all for the replies,

I already have the glass cut and tempered. tracks and regulators are installed too. The only thing I dont have is the rubber/felt that goes in the channel and the window base that the regulator goes into.. Im sure i can find a distributor, just dont know what to ask for....

47 fasttoys,
What did you use for the window track felt? Is there a specific vehicle that you found uses the proper size that fits our application?

Restoration Specialties, www.restorationspecialties.com, has a lot of different sizes and shapes of the type of weather stripping that you are asking about. Their catalog shows the end view and has measurements. You should be able to find something that would work for what you want to do.

Re: door glass metal surround delete

Looks like I need the window lift channels for the bottom of the glass. I have found repops for 51 and later, but nothing for the ealrier AD truck.

Seems like im shopping for a set original door glass with frames?
