Wiring help...Can't figure out one wire ???

What is this light colored wire that I'm pointing at? I know the purple wire goes to the starter and in my diagram it shows the other wire goes to the starter too. It also shows that the wire could be purple or the color that it is which i believe is faded orange. The wire also seems to be covered in a fabric instead of a plastic jacket.

Here's the diagram I'm looking at. The wire I'm looking at is to the right of the purple starter wire. It shows it could be two colors.

Typical engine harness has :

purple to starter "S" side

yellow to starter and terminates at coil. "R" side

green to temp sending unit.

tan/brown colored wire goes to brake valve by master cylinder.

The fabric you are talking about usually is covering the green wire for the temp sending unit.

Hope this helps,
Thomas

It's actually right above the green wire

It also depends on if your truck has a warning light cluster or a full gauge cluster.

It's a warning light cluster

Re: Wiring help...Can't figure out one wire ???

The cloth colored wire is the purple/orange striped wire you can see from the harness, which runs into a soldered split connection, which branches off to the coil and the starter solenoid. At least that's the location of it. I'm running HEI, so insead of that wire mine runs a large gauge red wire instead and doesn't connect like the original.

I believe that is a resistance wire, which has a built in resistance so it won't run a full 12V.

Hope that helps. Also, in the future, if you don't know where something goes, you can always mock the wiring in place. It's all pre-cut to length, so there's only a small number of connections in the vicinity of the terminal to which it will connect.

When I was learning schematics, I would put them in photoshop, then make layers and erase the stuff I wasn't interested in, that helped me narrow down what wires went to what circuits. It's especially helpful when you look at a common schematic, and not a fancy color one like we're so blessed to have in these forums.

Thank you. My problem is I did a Ls swap and I'm trying to figure out what wires I need and don't need. That was one of the last wires I've been trying to figure out. So I'm guessing I don't need that wire correct?

Re: Wiring help...Can't figure out one wire ???

It looks like the resistor wire thats tied into a yellow wire to the starter and the coil. it cuts down the voltage to the points distributor. EDIT: boy I'm a slow typer, Lefty beat me out..LOL

Lol. That's the resistor wire for the coil it gives the coil 9 volts of power except when starting.it splits off to a yellow wire down to the starter and coil.
If you plan on running a hei distributer that's the wire you pull and replace with a 10-12 ga wire for a full 12 volts to the batt terminal on the distributer.

No, you don't need or want that particular wire. HOWEVER, you can and will want to replace that wire with a large gauge wire unless you've already rewired stuff.
