Rear main seal 292

I'm driving a 1970 292 and my rear main seal starting leaking recently and I'm looking to replace soon. I've dropped my oil pan before and it is a pain in the rear having to lift the motor. Does anyone have any advice on if I can get the rear main changed by removing the oil pan bolts but not lifting the motor to fully remove the pan. Thank you

Would I at least be able to lower it enough to have the clearance to get in there and pull the seal out

BTDT. You will have to loosen motor mounts and even free up one side, and jack up rear of block to get oil pan out for regasketing.
Yes it's a PIA.

For the amount of time you will spend laying on your back cursing ,cleaning the old gaskets off and replacing them it's just easier to spend a weekend and pull it out ,Change ALL the gaskets ,clean, repaint and reinstall and not take the chance of it leaking again .Sometimes it just pays to bite the bullet and GIT ER DONE

Same thing I was going to suggest. It only takes an hour or so to get a 6 cyl out, and it is so much easier to get done right the first time. Plus the engine and engine compartment can be cleaned up, plus there might be other problems that could be attended to while the engine is out.

Get a couple friends, fire up the grill, stock up on favorite beverages and make a weekend out of it.

x3 on Grumpy's post. You are far better off pulling the engine & replacing all the gaskets, seals, AND freeze plugs.
