Anyone use a mustang Gas Tank in a 47-54?
Looking to see if anyone has successfully used a mustang tank in a 47-54 truck with the original frame, (not a S10 swap) and how they did it. Pics would be great! Thanks

A 67-68 Camaro tank is a better fit. It hides better and you have the option of side fill, rear fill or bed fill

This is NOT true of them in a '55.2-'59, right? The Mustang copy with side fill option is the best overall "fit"?

Re: Anyone use a mustang Gas Tank in a 47-54?
The 55.2 - 59 trucks have a wider frame than the earlier trucks, if there is a tank that fits better than the Mustang units I don't know what it is. You have to trim ~3/8" width out of the frame rails and, depending on your rear suspension setup, you have to space the tank's flanges up over the leaf hanger rivets.
I don't think anybody is using MII tanks in 47-54 trucks, though - the tank would be way too wide for an AD truck frame.

Re: Anyone use a mustang Gas Tank in a 47-54?
55.2 to 59 is a 34 inch wide frame front to back and the AD trucks are A frames 25" front to 46" in the back where the tank goes. Mustang tank is 32-3/8 and the Camaro is 39-3/8 wide.

I am not asking about the 55.2+ trucks, I don't care what fits those. I am looking specifically for information regarding mustang tanks in the 47-54 trucks. THanks

Yeah, but I do. 47-59 is a shared sub-forum, the ONLY shared forum on this site.

Re: Anyone use a mustang Gas Tank in a 47-54?
I'm glad this question came up as i'm getting ready to pull the trigger on the tank. I was set on the 68-70 mustange tank (for 1950 GMC) but now dwcsr's comments and his recent build have caused me to re-think my decision...hmmm....

I don't plan on using one, I have an NOS 47-48 tank. But I do like the idea of a nice new tank to bolt in that's for sure. I ran a '64 Nova tank in my 48 for years. Brian

Re: Anyone use a mustang Gas Tank in a 47-54?
Looks like you can buy a Camaro tank for 90 bucks. Seems like a way to move the tank out of the cab and get a little more room for the seat

Denali, I have some pics of the Mustang tank mounted in my 48 truck and will see if I can find them for you.
I do like the fit of the Camaro tank dwcsr linked us too. I've been researching what to use in my Burb. Thanks dwcsr! |

Denali,
Basically built a frame for the tank and mounted it. Apologies, I don't seem to have good pictures. Here is what I do have. |

Re: Anyone use a mustang Gas Tank in a 47-54?
I used a 1970 Mustang 20 gallon gas tank from Rock Auto in my 1948 Chevy 3100. The tank fits perfectly between the rails with no trimming needed. The spare tire cross member mount was removed and a 2X4 .125 wall square tube rear cross member was welded on at the end of the frame rails. The Mustang tank comes with a top mount rear gas filler. I removed this filler and welded on a new fill spout on the top left corner. I did not want a bed filler, I now fill thru a gas filler on the driver side rear fender. I am using an LS 6.2 engine so I installed a Tanks in tank Walbro 255 electric fuel pump. This tank can not be seen from the rear of the truck.

Re: Anyone use a mustang Gas Tank in a 47-54?
I am essentially doing the same installation in my 1952 AD truck. I am making a frame to surround the tank and will use the tanks mounting holes to bolt it in. I am using the 64 - 68 Mustang fuel injection tank from Tanks Inc. The tank has a center mounted filler cap. This tank also has an EFI style internal baffling for use with the in-tank pump as opposed to a standard Mustang tank. I bought it with their pump which I believe is a Walbro unit. This pump is compatible with flows/pressures for GM and other fuel injection makes.
