yoke question
haven't been on in a while, but been slowly tinkering with a 78 c10, got the new motor in and started last night, went to hook up the driveshaft and its too short, it had a turbo 350 in it before and id assume a long shaft as its a truck, i got my buddies 305 with turbo 350 out of his camaro, and i believe its a short shaft seeing as its about 2 or 3 inches shorter, i was looking at longer yokes yesterday and has anyone here encountered this before? just looking at what yoke to get to resolve this issue....or if you guys know what driveshaft i should get instead...trying to go the cheapest route possible

Re: yoke question
if you have a local pick u part then you could see if they have the driveshaft you need at a decent price

Re: yoke question
There were actually three length turbo 350's. 6" , 9", and 12".
The Camaros, Nova's , Chevelle's had 6". Pickups had 9", and full size cars had the 12". Some trucks had the 6". They came with the two piece driveshaft with center steady bearing. I ran into a same problem a few years back. I happen to be a Welder, and had a spare drive shaft. I precise cut my original just forward of the rear u joint. Cut the other shaft three inches longer, clamped/welded together. I got lucky, and it did not require balancing. If I had to do it again, think I would find the two piece set up from a junk yard. |

Re: yoke question
Three ways to do this: Find the right rear shaft for the tranny (take a while to accomplish). Have a shaft made at a driveline shop, new tube and use your yoke and u-joint ends. The last would be to get a driveline out of a longbed truck and have the one end cut to length and reweld it to the tube and balance.

Re: yoke question
i ended up ordering a longer yoke, i talked with my buddy and he said pretty much the same thing you guys did, get a longer drive shaft, I'm going to end up doing that at some point as this truck will not be driven very fast and this is a temp fix at most, plan with this truck is to give it to my father in law as he likes the truck, but if this longer yoke ends up working out and no vibration ill be happy with it, but if it has any issues ill be ordering a driveshaft
