Re: Transmission Question

Easiest is to have the th350 rebuilt. Its a great transmission and your rig is already set up for it.

Is there a reason you want something different?

Re: Transmission Question

even easier to buy a rebuilt TH350, turning in your old one as a core. Like chopit said, your truck is already set up for it.

obviously, the possibility of of a 700 OD swap comes up, but there's several details that run into more work than just R&Ring a 350.

Re: Transmission Question

you could swap in a 700r4 but there is a controller needed. you could swap in a turbo 400 but the driveshaft would need work. the exchange turbo 350 is a no brainer if you just wanna do a swap. check out some speed shops if you want a beefier rebuilt. also think about stall speeds on the converter and shift kits etc. stop in at a speed shop and talk with a tranny guy who knows his stuff. also, if the trans is going, plan on doing something with the existing cooler because all the crap from the old trans gets lodged in there and then, after you get the new trans installed, the crap starts flushing out into the new trans. some shops will install an inline filter but I usually just replace the rad (with the integral cooler) and/or the separate stand alone cooler. if you have an expensive custom rad you may just want to get it out of the system by installing a totally stand alone trans cooler.

Re: Transmission Question

A 2004R is nearly a bolt-in OD swap. Just move the tranny crossmember back a little and its in. This tranny is controlled by throttle position instead of vacuum, so a different bracket on your carb is required.

Re: Transmission Question

And a 200r4 is the same length as a th350, right? Don't need a new driveshaft

This is only true for the 4L60E, a later all-electronic version of the 700.

The short tail 350 is the same length as the 2004R. See below for other transmission lengths:
